24th & 25th February

24/02/10
Completed morning program. If you have medicines which are left out after your treatment, you may give them in charity to institutions which receive them and give those who need.Today I delivered quite a few medicines, which were left with us, in the Sai Temple on Lodhi road,New Delhi. The medical officers there take and prescribe them. These are given to the patients in charity. One should ensure that only unexpired medicines are given.
Retired to sleep at 2315 hours.
25/02/10
Completed morning program.Wrote letters to the Minister,Health and Family Welfare, and the Secretary for permitting CGHS to issue unsubstituted medicines, prescribed by the consultants. As per the circular of the CGHS, dated 30th Sep.2009,the medical officer in charge CGHS dispensary gives medicines, available in the dispensary,if their formulations are the same as in those which are prescribed by the consultants. But the consultants do not approve of such medicines and recommend taking of only prescribed medicines.I have appealed to the Director of CGHS and to the Ministry to continue to give the prescribed medicines and not the substituted ones.If my request is turned down I will appeal to the High Court, Delhi for considering the request.I hope good sense should prevail among the health authorities and they will agree to issue unsubstituted medicines at least to heart and others suffering from serious problems.I delivered another packet of medicines, not required by us,in Sai Temple.
Retired to sleep at 2300 hours.

"VALUE HAS A VALUE ONLY IF IT'S VALUE IS VALUED" -- by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

15/02/10 to 23/02/10
On 19th Venita had her eye check-up.Dr.Talwar said that there was an improvement in her right eye.Left eye is working well.On 20th the statement of CEO,Coca Cola, attracted my attention. It was made by him a day earlier and sent to me by a friend.I reproduce it below:

30 second Speech by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

"Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some
five balls in the air. You name them - Work, Family, Health, Friends and
Spirit and you're keeping all of these in the Air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you
drop it, it will bounce back.

But the other four Balls - Family, Health, Friends and
Spirit - are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they
will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even
shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand
that and strive for it."

WORK EFFICIENTLY DURING OFFICE HOURS AND
LEAVE ON TIME. GIVE THE REQUIRED TIME TO YOUR FAMILY,
FRIENDS & HAVE PROPER REST.

"VALUE HAS A VALUE ONLY IF ITS VALUE IS VALUED".

I forwarded it to my friends and others with the following mail:

"Dear all,
May like to see.The briefest speech was that of Winston Churchil, ever given in Cambridge University. He just said:"Never give up,never give up,never give up"and left.

Completed morning program.Vikas rang up on 8th Feb.and wanted to know if I was going to attend a dinner where he was going.I told him that I had not been invited and that I was leaving for Dhanbad in the afternoon.I felt bad for not being invited for dinner, knowing fully well that even if I had been invited I would not have gone.Last month I attended only 2 dinner/lunch out of 10 to which I was invited.Outside food does not suit me much. But it appears my ego would be satisfied if I was invited to dinners/luncheon where others were invited, even though I did not/could not attend many of them. This egoist hypocrisy has to be shaken off as soon as possible. Some people use invitation/non-invitation as favor or disfavor and use them as pressure to compel/induce subservience. It is just like Pakistan organizing attacks by militants as pressure points. Some people are partying type and like to attend parties. We were also partying type earlier. But now we prefer to avoid going to parties unless it is absolutely necessary.
We visited Gurgaon to attend birthday party of Aryan. As we were tired,we retired to sleep early at 2130 hours.

Wedding Bells for Aditya and Pragati

08/02/10
Completed morning program.Packed for journey to Dhanbad.I requested Barun to get me a berth in AC1 as I would be uncomfortable in AC3 tier.I am grateful to him he got me reservation in AC1 for outward and inward journeys.
We reached late at the railway station to catch the train. It all happened because the driver took a wrong turn and we had to travel via Karolbasg, a route full of traffic lights. He also did not know the VIP parking and took us to a dead end from where we had to hire a rickshaw to reach the station. We ran to board the train and boarded it when it was about to start. It was nice to see for the 1st time Venita jogging on the platform. His brother, Barun, somehow managed to take her in.The marriage party consisted of 27 persons.Mr. & Mrs. Sashi Sinha,a cousin of Venita, are also traveling in AC1 but have bought their own tickets. They are traveling to Kolkata after attending marriage at Dhanbad. The fare of AC3 tier ticket is about Rs.1600 whereas the fare of AC1 is Rs.2100 for a senior citizen.I got a rebate of about Rs.900,otherwise I would have had to pay Rs.3080. I have told Barun that I would pay him the difference of fare between AC3 tier and AC1,which is about Rs.500. Venita is traveling in AC3 tier.Others are also traveling in AC3 tier.As per the practice the fare for marriage party has to be paid by the parents of the boy who is to get married. It is not a good practice. We should pay for our journey instead. It is always good to travel together because then you can go on talking , joking, playing antakshari, singing and reveling in other ways.
In AC1 compartment I have the company of Mr.VK Dutta,a trader of alcohol, which is used by makers of whiskey, beer, wine etc.Alcohol is produced from molasses(dregs of sugarcane after making of sugar),barley, grapes, wheat, rice etc.Scotch is a grain as also a flower which grow in Scotland. The alcohol is made out of it and thereafter used in production of scotch whiskey, which is nothing but 30-40% of alcohol from scotch mixed with flavor and water. In the process of making alcohol, yeast(kind of bacteria) is mixed in the mash of molasses etc. which separates alcohol from the same and thereafter it is used for production of hard drinks keeping in the percentage of alcohol in each one of them as per requirement. It was interesting to know the process of making alcohol and alcoholic drinks.
The New Delhi Howrah Rajdhani Express by which we were traveling had been stopped at Gaya due to Bandh called by Naxalites for about 3 hours.By the time we reached Dhanbad the train was about four and half hours late.
09/02/10
We were welcomed with roses at the Dhanbad railway station. The accommodation of the marriage party was arranged by Dr.(Capt.)UC Rai,Head of the department of Clinical Pathology, in a local Medical College, the father of the bride,in the Seventeen Degree Hotel, the best in Dhanbad though it has not yet got a Star ranking. The management of the hotel has applied for Star ranking and hope to get it soon.It is decent hotel. It is owned by Sh.Khemka,a local businessman.Dr.Rai's wife Dr.Pratibha Rai.She is a senior gynecologist.Dr.Rai is a relation of a batch mate of mine,Dr.Balmiki Prasad,IAS (Retired),presently Governor of Sikkim. My batch mate told Dr.Rai that he need not worry about his daughter as she was going to a good family .Rais belong to Bhumihar community and we belong to kayasth community. It is an inter-caste marriage. The boy and girl knew each other since last 7-8 years. They had coaching together at Kota for admission into an engineering college.Thereafter they took admission in the same college near Bangalore. Now they are working in private companies.Bhaiyya works in THUMS Long Beach Company in U.S.A.and i do not know where Pragati is working. But this much I know that she will join Bhaiyya in U.S.A and work in another company at a nearby place. It has been a steady relationship for a long period. After both are settled in good jobs, they decided to get married. This relationship is going to last,I am sure.Pragati is graceful, looks a corporate girl, and intelligent.Bhaiyya is handsome and smart. Both complement each other. Both come from middle class and have its core values .
During the day "Gode Bharai Ceremony","Phaldan and Tilak Ceremony","Jaimal and Ring Ceremony","Gurhati ceremony by Jeth" and "Wedding Ceremony" were performed. We had lunch in Debate hall of the hotel and cocktail dinner at the residence of Dr.Rai in the Pandal. The crowd in the dinner was a mixed gathering of poor, rich and all of us evincing coexistence of all levels,a reflection of India. There was only Golkunda wine which is very sweet. It was the wine we used to get in late 60's.Besides Golkunda wine there was Antiquity whiskey. The wedding ceremony took place late night in the Mandap, especially constructed on the roof top of the 3 storeyed magnificent residential cum clinic complex of Rais named as Srishti .While Venita stayed back for the wedding ceremony ,I returned hotel. The road from hotel to residence of Dr.Rai takes about an hour or less depending upon traffic. It is heavily potted and shakes you up well while you travel up and down. Some more ceremonies took place on Day 02,10th February 2010,namely "Mangadhaki", "Bhaat Khai","Bidai"and "Pag Phera" ceremonies. We left the hotel at about 5:00 pm for the railway station. The Hawrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express arrived before time and left Dhanbad at 20:05 hrs.Dr (Capt.)Umesh C.Rai along with his relations came to see us off.A no.of interns of Dr.Rai helped us in loading the luggage of over 30 persons in the comparment. In AC1 I had been given lower berth in a coupe. The other occupant was Mr.Parasar who is CEO in a Spanish Mining Company, doing mining operation in Dhanbad area.He gets $100,000 in a year.We exchanged e-mail ids and tel.ph.no.We are now in touch with each other through e-mails.
Retired to sleep at 2200 hours.
There were so many jerks in the train that I woke up quite a few times .It was a very disturbed sleep. On arrival at New Delhi,I sent the following mail to the Chairman,Railway Board.
<">Travel by Howrah-Rajdhani via Dhanbad to New Delhi: Train No.2301and by Train no.2302 from New Delhi to Dhanbad
Dear Sir,
I traveled by 1A from New Delhi to Dhanbad on 8th February by Train No.2302 and back on 10th February by Train no.2301.
It was a very disturbing journey. There were so many jerks that sometimes my sleep was disturbed.I was told that the couplings of the compartments did not hold them adequately. When the train is in speed,it is alright. But as soon as it slows down the jerks start/disturb us.You may like to examine and take corrective action.
Regards
Yours sincerely

Completed morning program. There was a get-together in the house of Barun. He specially insisted that I should go to attend it along with Venita.I could not go as my body needed rest.It had been thoroughly shaken during train journey.Venita however went. She could not attend function as she developed diarrhea and vomited a lot.She had to come away early.I am told that there were lot of songs, dances, jokes and other revelry.
Retired to sleep at 2230 hours.
13.02.10

Some anecdotes of Grandson

06/02/10 & 07/10/02
Completed morning program.Samsung engineer came to explain the working of the refrigerator, purchased by us after selling the old one.He was not well versed about the functioning of the refrigerator.I decided to request Samsung to depute another person for the purpose.Vitamin A is best derived from sun-bath for our body.It is also derived to some extent from fish and meat and to a very minimal level from the milk.My elder sister arrived Noida from Ganga Nagar. She is staying with Gita. She was to touch our house in Delhi. But I advised against it as she wanted to go back in the evening to Noida. It would have been very taxing for her.I told her to come during one of the days her stay in Noida along with Gita if possible. After marriage and children it is quite natural for a person to be more attracted towards his/her children and less to blood relations (parents, brothers, sisters).
Visited Rani's place.A beautiful exhibition of animals, flowers and plants, made out of waist materials is arranged. We were also given a cup of tea and snacks. After watching it we went to Noida to attend the Haldi ceremony of Bhaiya, followed by lunch in the company of close relations. We reached quite late due to taking wrong route to Noida.Babua could not see the Haldi ceremony. He went and sat at the ceremony place. He would not get up from the place as he had not seen the ceremony, which was already over before his arrival.Bhaiya had to stage it again for him.Babua applied some haldi on the forehead of Bhaiya and was satisfied with it.After lunch when we were to leave Babua asked where was his gift.He expects a gift from any place where he goes.He was given a small packet with some money in it.But he would not be satisfied with it.He still insisted for a gift. When I explained to him that he could buy any gift he liked from the money in the packet,he appeared to be satisfied and left with us.

Grand children are always loving

05/02/10
Completed morning program.Venita visited Neera in Max hospital. She is admitted for treatment due to complication of typhoid. She is there in the hospital for over a month.Venita got her eye checked in the Center for Sight. The Economist quotes a woman writer to say that happiness lies in-
1)Good health & good health care.
2)Positive attitudes.
3)Friends & relations.
4)Constructive pursuits.
I am inclined to agree with her.
Abhishree wrote me a letter which I replied. It is her 2nd letter.I am told that her teachers appreciated her letter as well as my reply to it very much. Both the letters are pasted in the notice board of the school and may be part of the school magazine. She wrote me about Roman architecture and I wrote about Roman Law.Her letter to us and my reply are produced below:

"Dear Granddad and Grandmother

I went to the London museums. Iv learnt that the Romans made the

Building .We saw lots of Roman stuff . They made the whole of

London . I liked the weighing bags - some of us played with them.
We saw Roman clothes - tunic - toga (big shawl). We saw a torc (bracelet) and shield. In the Roman kitchen, the oven door looked like a
mouse door. They ate slimy snails . They said hello called salve'. Ixxxxxooooooooxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxooooooooooooooooooow Abhishreexo
"

"DEAREST ABHISHREE,
NICE TO RECEIVE YOUR SECOND LETTER.ROMANS ARE GREAT, CONSERVATIVE AND TRADITIONAL IN THEIR OUTLOOK.THIS I CAME TO KNOW WHEN I STUDIED ROMAN LAW FOR MY MASTER'S DEGREE IN LAWS.THEY WILL NOT AGREE TO CHANGE THEIR LAWS EASILY.AS LAWS HAVE TO BE CHANGED WITH CHANGE IN TIMES,THE MAGISTRATES THERE DEVISED A METHOD OF INTERPRETATION BY WHICH THEY WILL CHANGE THE LAW IN SUCH A SUBTLE WAY THAT PEOPLE WILL NOT GET TO KNOW THAT LAW HAS BEEN CHANGED.
WE ARE PLANNING TO COME SO THAT WE ARE PRESENT ON YOUR BIRTHDAY IN LONDON.
TODAY I AM TAKING DADI 10TH TIME TO CENTER FOR SIGHT FOR HER EYE CHECK-UP.THE EYE SIGHT IN HER RIGHT EYE HAS BECOME MINIMAL.
KEEP ON WRITING LIKE THIS.

LOVE

YOURS AFFECTIONATELY

DADA & DADI"

Emulation,inspiration and example

04/02/10
Completed morning program.Visited the Supreme Court for professional work. The distinction between emulation, inspiration and example is brought out clearly in the editorial of the Indian Express dated 3rd February,2010.The emulation refers to creation of a circumstance with the object of producing a desired result.Inspiration refers to a philosophy and is psychological in nature. And example is what one sees as he watches a person and absorbs his good and bad habits. After my address to BED students at Sardar Patel BED college Farooq Nagar,Haryana on the Republic day 2010,some of them who interacted with me said that they were quite inspired by my talk and replies to their questions.I remember some journalists writing in different news papers and magazines of Assam and Meghalaya, during my tenure as an IPS officer there, branding me as a role model for the force to emulate. But I think one should not emulate another.He/She should adapt himself/herself to others rather than emulate them in toto.Their individuality is relevant and could not be written off.

Difficulties come as a boon

02/02/10
Completed morning program.Visited SBI Vikaspuri to check on the status of issuance of atm card. The ones with us at the moment are not working.Visited Supreme Court for professional work.Faced difficulty as I don't have proximity card.Applied for it. A good sms which came from a friend is given below:
"Difficulties in our life do not come to destroy us.But to help us to realize our hidden potential and power.Let difficulties know that we are more difficult."

I replied as follows:
"It's true."

Friendship

01/02/10
Completed morning program.Attended to professional and personal work.Venita accompanied me for shopping in South Delhi.A friend sent the following interesting sms:
"Zindagi DOSTON mein mila karti hai,or Ye dost bhi ajeeb hote hein..
Dene pe aaye to jaan dede,Lene pe aaye to hansi tak cheenle.
Kehne pe aaye to dil k tmam raaz tak keh de,Chupane pe aaye to yeh tak na bataye k khafa kyun h.
Naraz hone pe aaye to apni sanso ka vaar de..
Bas dost zindagi mein nahi mila karte ..
balki zindagi DOSTON mein mila karte hein."

In reply to this sms I sent the following sms:
"Excellent.Sentiments melt away before self interests. It is true for sentiment of friendship also."

On receipt of my reply my friend got a shock and thought that he was not a friend of mine but a person who keeps in touch with me to axe his grind. As soon as his self interest is fulfilled he forgets and so also the glib of friendship.I told him that I made a general observation and that there are exceptions to it and that he was an exception. So was his friendship.
Out of curiosity,I reviewed the month of January and our movements during it.Apart from visiting Kurukshetra on the New Year day we were in Delhi. During the month we had 8 invitations for lunch & dinner and hosted a tea party and a lunch.Out of 8 invitations, we could attend 2 luncheon only,1 at Meghalaya House and another at BED college Farooq Nagar,Haryana. We could not go in others, mostly due to extreme cold weather or sickness of Venita.Earlier we did not miss a single party. It appears that now we are attending to 25 percent of them only.We will try to improve it to at least 50 percent during this month.
Retired to sleep at 2200 hours.

31/01/10

Completed morning program.Read the review of 'Lessons in Forgetting' by Anita Nair,a fiction. In an explanation of human love and suffering,it offers us a philosophy of forgetting as a survival trick. The two tragic characters of the novel are found trying to forget their tragic past to put up with the present.Venita has mastered this art. She tells there is no point in remembering things which are sad and caused you pain.According to her one should forget and forgive and go ahead in life.I find she practices it also. As for me I find it is difficult to forget though I forgive. As because I cannot forget the episodes keep on hitting my memory and sometimes make me quite unstable. After reading the review of the book I feel like reading it.I hope to buy a copy soon.
Retired to sleep at 2300 hours.

30/01/10

Completed morning program.Had Anulom and Vilom pranayam for 20 minutes to cure/reduce the pain in the nerves of the right hand besides other pranayams.Tweet and Facebook bring you face to face with a network of contacts.Blogs are exclusive. But in face to face it is one to one.Quite a few have approached me to join face to face and other groups. But I have not yet joined any.May join one sooner or later.Due to sickness of Venita could not go to attend the engagement ceremony of Gaurav's sister in India Habitat Center.
Retired to sleep at 2230 hours

29/01/10

Did sukshm vyayam and brisk walk.People ring you up when they have something up their sleeves where we can help.Otherwise they don't.We have to understand that life is like that.It is management of self interest rather than anything else.We have visions which cater to fulfillment of these self interests.Sentiments too are facts of life but they melt away before self interests. We should help each other in fulfillment of mutual self interests without consideration.Generally it is a different phenomenon.People help because their self interest is buttered.A colleague rang up and requested for helping him in the appointment of a law officer.I informed him that it is always a political appointment.Bureaucrats hardly play a role in it.It is the Ministry of Law which decides on the recommendation of the Govt. and in the Govt. it is the political executive whose wishes are endorsed and recommended to the Ministry of Law.I told I have no contact with the politicians and therefore cannot help in the matter.

Retired to sleep 2300 hours.
