28th December

Completed morning program. Visited Punjab National bank. Spent 2 hours in the chambers. The chamber is not humming with life due to scant attendance of advocates. Most of them are on holidays. KTS is in Palace on Wheels. The palace has taken him and his friends to Varanasi,Khajuraho and perhaps now to Agra instead of to places in Rajasthan, for which booking had been done. The train was diverted to Varanasi circuit due to blocking of Railway line by Gujjars in Rajasthan. Visited Hanuman temple on Vinay Marg, Chanakyapuri way back home. Sheomohan has come.
Retired to sleep at 10pm.

24th to 26th December

On 24th visited Precision Dental center at Sarita Vihar for a dental process. Attended chamber from 1pm-4.45pm. Venita is to go to Allahabad to participate in the engagement ceremony of Anand, younger son of my younger sister on 5th February,2011. Had to buy ticket for her to go on 3rd February and return on 6th February. She also proposes to have a dip at Sangam in this cold winter as she thinks a dip in Sangam in the month of Magh is auspicious. I am not accompanying her.Bought ticket for both of us to go to Allahabad on 4th March for the marriage on 5th and reception on 6th. On 7th March we will come to Fatehpur for a week long stay & return New Delhi on 14th March. On 25th heard the Christmas message of Queen Elizabeth broadcast by BBC. Curiously she wished that all of us should play games as these developed a camaraderie & mutual cooperation which are lacking in society these days. Also heard the message of the Pope. He also said that Christians should fight out persecution in Iraq and China. It was a very cold day, cloudy and hazy. Today is the birthday of Jesus Christ, who was crucified for standing up for values against the tyrannical Roman King. On 26th attended lunch hosted by MD Asthana, in connection with wedding reception of his son at IIC fountain lawns. MD was my batch mate and later he got selected in IAS. Met a number of other batch mates and acquaintances. There is a fountain in IIC but the lawns are not well maintained. Retired to sleep at 11.15 pm.

Neha and Babua also came. All of us met at Dilli Hat. On 23rd visited RML hospital for the Angiography of Venita's eyes. We also went Tanisque CP and South Ext. shops thereafter. 16th to 21st December

On 16th could not stick to the daily program. Had to leave for RML hospital for Venita's eye test. Dr. Mridul was instructed by Dr. AK Aggarwal to get it done. Dr. Malik of RML saw her eyes and recommended OCT and FFA. These are scheduled to be done on Tuesday next at 9am. Spent over 3 hours in the chamber and Venita went shopping. She likes shopping. It is said about chronic shoppers that there is a vacuum somewhere in there personality which they try to fill-up with shopping. On 17th Pilku came by Kingfisher flight no. IT-2 at about 11.25 am. Prasads came to meet him and all of had early dinner. They left at about 8 pm. After noting the reactions of the boys to the Will circulated to them I have decided to give equal share in the flat I own at Vikaspuri. We will have to revise the Will accordingly. Pilku stayed the whole day and night and we had a hearty chat after a long gap of time. On 18th Pilku went to office at about 10 am and from there to Gurgaon to meet Bablu and Silku and returned at about 10.30 pm. Driver Thapa is going on leave from tomorrow. I have engaged another driver Suresh from 14th December to take his place. He is being guided by Thapa about driving and general behavior. On 19th Pilku had to stay back at New Delhi due to cancellation of his flight to London. The Heathrow Air port is closed due to heavy snowing. I noticed that Pilku was not happy with it. He had to do lot of work during the current year which would now become pending unless he could go at least tomorrow. Sachin scored his 50th test century. On 20th Pilku left for London by Air India at 2.50pm. Today is his birthday also. We proposed to celebrate it. But he was keen to go back. Venita accompanied him to the Airport. I got my two half broken teeth extracted at the Precision Dental center in Sarita Vihar as well as capping of one tooth. Also visited Bablu in his office in Shanti Niketan and gave him a packet containing a jacket of Pilku to be given to Silku for change as it was not fitting him. On 21st visited chamber from 12.15-3.15 pm. The eye test of Venita was postponed to 24th at 12.30 pm. Dr.Mridul had given a telephone call.
Retired to sleep at 11.30 pm.

14th & 15th December

On 14th visited CGHS for Venita's medicines. Spent about 4 hours in chamber visited Pravesh.Snacks with tea offered by him upset my stomach. On way visited Hanuman Temple. On 15th attended a lunch in Palm court club in Gurgaon. Food was excellent. Subhash had invited for it to celebrate the birthday of his grandson.Curiously I was surprised to see at least about 20 couples. When I asked his son about so many people attending lunch on a working day, he informed that all of them were retired people and mostly ex railway officers known to his father. I went because Venita could not go due to sickness.I skipped court and chamber work for the day. Due to a bad stomach I did not take dinner and slept off at about 5.30 pm and got up at 3 am next day. In the lunch met Subhash's maternal uncle who was the then Joint Secretary of MHA after a long gap of time. He is 78. The railway officers have a good network of get together and meet each other often by rotation. I cannot think of such a situation in regard to any other service. None else socializes so much even after retirement as the railway officers do. It is a good thing and we should meet like them regularly.

13th December

Completed morning program. Visited GPO to drop new year cards as well as birthday greeting cards to Pilku and Ruchi. Visited Escorts hospital to collect the reports prescribed by Dr.Arora(Urologist).The reports are normal. The Uriflow report shows some deficiency but the experts say that it is alright and normal keeping in view my age.Visited Precision Dental Center at Sarita Vihar for extraction of two broken teeth as well as crowning of one which has been root cannaled. Paid Rs.1800/- for ceramic capping of the tooth. The dentist took the print of the tooth to prepare its crown.Spent over 3 hours in the chamber for professional and personal work.
A friend met me a few days back and said, "Despite taking care of my wife, Aarti, I could not change her nature.I'm in early 60's,as you know, but she is scathing. She humiliates me particularly in front of her blood relations. All her relations listen her with amusement, but none objects. She is very convincing in telling a lie. She also humiliates my blood relations. She did not spare my father too. Once she humiliated him also quite badly. I could not imagine the way she did it. My father did not even complain of it to me. I came to know from another source. I, however, did not check with my father. I wish I should have. I cannot now as he is no more. Now when she misbehaves I don't react. I keep mum. There is no other way I can deal with her."
After listening to my friend I told that he was following the right course. It was not possible to divorce at this late stage and in the Indian context. My friend was feeling light after talking to me his heart. I told him that he could talk to me anything to release his tension. It is better to talk than to keep it to yourself.
Read the interview of a Sufi singer in the Indian Express of today, supplement 'Eye', in the last page. He said that spirituality to him was oneness with the universe. Once we realized it and serve others as much as we can, the screen between us and God would go.Then we would see Him.
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

It was interesting to read Wikileaks regarding congress strategies to appease the minorities by invoking conspiracy theory in connection with 26-11 terrorist attack in Mumbai. Abhishree rang up and desired to visit Kaziranga. I said she could visit anytime from October to March.
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

The CGHS has not upgraded its computers with the new list of hospitals and clinics as per the memorandum dated 7th October. There was a group photograph in the chamber for the new year card. Visited Mr.Swain to condole the death of his wife.
I liked the following statement of Sh.Prasanna Rajan in the latest issue of India today," The politics of Social justice has already passed the empowerment stage, and reached the enrichment stage. It is still work in progress and fallen Raja is unlikely to make any difference".
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

Venita visited his house.Sh.Swain was in the policy division as PA to AIG(P),my staff officer when I was JD policy.
I saw a news report in the Times of India dated 5th December. It enumerated different reasons to prove that Delhi was far from being a world class city. Some of the reasons are stated below :
1. Everyday life is chaotic and on the edge.
2. Traffic bottelnecks, power cuts, water shortages in summer are common.
3. The deficit is not only for the physical infrastructure, it extends to school admissions, health care and basic need, that is, security.
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

Daughters-in-law

Much is written about daughters-in-law & relationship with their in-laws. The general impression is the same all over the world. There is a certain amount of distrust/dislike among them. So far as we are concerned, we have told our sons to go along the wishes of their wives vis-a-vis us.We feel we should not be the cause of discord among our sons and their wives . It has worked quite well and they are living happily. Of course all of us have stresses & strains in marital relationships but these are overcome and life goes on.We as in-laws should intervene only to restore marital happiness & cohesion among our sons & their wives without being over-bearing & imposing. For example, when we notice that a son is to break-off from his wife due to some reason or the other, we should intervene so that the marriage goes on and there is no break-up. It has to be done in the most unobtrusive way to avoid hostile reactions of one or the both. Luckily my 1st and 2nd son have daughters only. They won't face this problem. But my one son who has a son should be prepared for such an experience. I hope he will keep my advice in view in the interest of happiness of the entire family.
We should deal with daughters-in-law as daughters-in-law and not as daughters. The status of daughter-in-law is a status which invokes respect in the same way as the status of a son-in-law does in the home of his wife. We sometimes commit mistakes and start expecting the same from daughters-in-law as we expect from our daughters and problems start.

30th November

On 30th collected Venita's investigation reports from City X-ray,Tilak Nagar.Sent Will/Wish to Pilku,Silku and Bablu for their comments yesterday.None has reacted so far.I wished happy birthday to Bablu on 1st December,2010 & inquired of the Will/Wish.He had not yet seen them.I told him to go through & let me have his reaction. As far as Bablu is concerned,I think he should endorse the Will as it is tilted in his favor.Parmarth Niketan informed that the trip to Mansarovar-Kailash is likely to go in 2012 and not in 2011.I requested them to consider and include us in the trip in 2012.On way back from office visited Hanuman temple on Vinay Marg in Chanakyapuri, where I used to visit on a regular basis on way back from the walk in Nehru Park.
Retired to sleep at 10.30pm.

24th to 29th November.

On 24th visited IIFT at Pragati Maidan. I had dropped Venita there in the forenoon. I joined her at about 3.30 pm. Lot of people, mainly of lower middle class. Hall no. 18 which housed foreign stalls was a big draw. Amitabh Thakur met in the chamber. On 25th Venita visited IITF again. I visited SBI mainly for driver's work. His LIC policy had lapsed. It was renewed. Later picked up Venita at about 4pm from the IIFT. On 26th visited Dr.Agarwal's dental clinic. But it is de-registered by the CGHS, so the permission from CGHS for dental processes there became infructuous. Visited dental clinic at Dwarka mode and Motibagh-I. None of these impressed me. On 27th Venita went for various tests as desired by Dr. AK Agarwal at City X-ray, Tilak Nagar. Thereafter she again visited IIFT 3rd time. She must have walked in the IIFT for over 10 hours during last 3 visits, including this one. Shopping is her great hobby. She never gets tired in it and forgets all her pains of the body. I stayed back at home.Heard the interview of Ratan Tata in the Walk the Talk program of NDTV. He emphasize on flexibility in policy matters. His interest is designing. After December 2012 when he quits as the Chairman of TATA Group,he wants to spend all the seven days of the week as Sundays. On 28th Sh. Bansal, a BJP office bearer, wanted me to come to the meeting of Human rights committee of which he is the new incharge. I will attend it as an invitee and not be a formal member. I am not a member of any political party and hope will never be member of any political party in future. On 29th had to go to Center for Sight for showing Venita's eyes to Dr.Talwar. Dr. Talwar suggested OCT, which is Angiography of both the eyes, to know their present condition. Visited Dental clinics at Sarita Vihar and Pashcim Vihar. I liked the one at Pashcim Vihar and will undergo dental processes there in future. Spoke to Barun, Ajju and AP Singh over phone about miscellaneous matters. Pravesh dropped in the chamber. Venita came to the chamber at about 3pm after shopping.
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

19th to 23rd November

On 19th could not leave for Chandigarh as the flight was delayed and in the mean time Atiar had taken adjournment of Frigoglass case to 3rd February, 2011. I stayed at the airport from 7am to 2pm. It took lot of time to get back my checked in luggage. Sh. Sanjaya Sahu could go early as he had not checked in any luggage. Visited SBI. While on way to the airport, traffic was very slow as half the road in the Delhi Cantonment area had been blocked by the movement of heavy armored Army vehicles. For a moment I thought I would miss the flight. But I could reach the airport at about 7am. On 20th watched the Indo-kiwis 3rd test match at Nagpur for quite sometime. The engagement of Kate Middleton and Prince William is much in all the channels. The celebrity cult not also bugs us it equally bugs Europeans. I find there is no relation between my work and pleasantness of thoughts. I have to introspect to find out the truth about it and the work which should suit my thoughts. On 21st we were to have lunch in Hyt and Regency. But I did not feel like going out and wished to relax at home. I informed Pravesh about it. On 22nd visited CGHS. The CMO did not give permission for metal crown to one of my teeth. He said it was not permissible. I said I would produce the circular permitting the same next day. Amitabh Thakur met me in the chamber. Visited Delhi Golf club for a cup of coffee with Sh. AP Singh. Attended wedding of VP Singh's daughter. On 23rd visited SBI and made the PPO up to date. Surprisingly no deduction is made from the account of driver Thapa for the premium due in October-November. This is a deficiency in service and I will take it up with the AGM, SBI.
Retired to sleep at 10pm.

30th October to 18th November

On 31st visited Chandigarh in connection with Frigoglass case on 1st November. The case was not taken up. And the next date of hearing was fixed on 19th November. On 3rd November left for Fatehpur by Puri express. The coolie and the conductor did not behave well. Will write to the Chairman Railway Board shortly about them. The train reached Fatehpur half an hour late at 2pm. Digvijay Singh, Adv. came. I gave him a sum of Rs.2000/- as his fees for appearance with me in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana. On 4th after the morning exercises I had a good massage in the Sun. In the evening went to market along with Venita who did shopping. Visited Naresh Bhai saab. Ajju and Shivji came to see us. In the morning late Shyam Kishore's wife also said hello to Venita and promised to come later as she was then going to the school where she was teaching. Her late husband was my class fellow in the eighth standard. She is the 3rd wife. When she was married to Shyam Kishore, she was 18/19 and Shyam Kishore was 50. They had three sons. Now she should be in late 30s. On 5th Shivji, Gopal and Pappu came along with their families in the evening after the Diwali lamps were lit. On the day we celebrated Diwali. Their another brother got a job in ICICI recently. He is unmarried and could not come along with Shivji and others. I told Shivji to send him to meet me before he leaves for Mathura, where he is posted in the ICICI branch. Sheomohan and his children helped Venita in lighting lamps in the big ancestral house.Had also isited Tameshwar temple in the morning. On 6th visited Dr. Chetan to wish him happy Diwali on way back from Kalkan temple in the morning. Took a round of main market which, as a friend says, is the Cannaught Place of Fatehpur. Met a class fellow of ninth standard. It was in early 50's. He cannot walk well and was walking inside his stationary shop on his knees like a child of 2 and half years. He is only 73 years and counting his days to leave the world. Krishna followed by son of Vidya babu (I don't know his name), an Ex BRTF Civilian officer came. Krishna is a retired Treasury officer of the Collectorate. Krishna was 2 year senior to me in the school and college. We talked of the ways of Zappers, their materialistic approach to life. Vidya Babu's son's son, let us call him A, as I don't know his name,a B-tech, fell in love with a married lady 15 years his senior in age with 2 grown up kids and disappeared with her. Nothing is known of them for the last 15 years. The discussion ended on a note of concern over commercialization of religious rituals and practices, need for meditation and looking inwards. Krishna talked of Ram Chandra mission and its head quarters in Chennai and meditation. We dispersed at about 10pm. On 7th Muzzan came along with his son Rustam and informed about admission of his 2nd son in the London School of Economics for the MBA course. Naresh Bhaisaab's 2 daughters in law came and met Venita along with his daughter's daughter. I did Chitragupt puja as desired by Venita. Visited Naresh Bhaisaab and spent one and half hour with him. On 8th. Visited Krishna and met his family. They talked of Ram Chandra mission. Venita talked of Sanatan Dharma. If the discussion would have continued, I am sure the entire family of Krishna would have become her follower. A retired group captain and his family visited. We visited Shivji also on his request. On 9th Venita left for Allahabad by train. On intervention of SHO, GRPS , she could get a seat in the train which the conductor gave reluctantly. Watching his face I felt as if he was being pick pocketed. They give a seat/berth on payment of bribe. The level of corruption has gone up very high. Even if you report hardly any action is taken. Wanted to inform Tarun about the coach in which Venita was traveling for convenience of receiving her. After quite a few calls he responded. Curiously he did not show any interest in knowing the coach number. Rather he said," Will she be able to get down of her own ?". I was wonder struck by the stupid question. I replied,"You should know better. She is your sister."I am sure Tarun said it because he has not been keeping well and much depressed due to the death of his mother recently. I informed Venita's younger sister also when she happened to ring me from Pondicherry for talking to Venita. Visited HDFC ATM and took out some money. All the other ATMs of Fatehpur were not functional for at least a week. Later SBI ATM started working. Sh. Amit Srivastava is the branch manager of the HDFC. He belongs to Fatehpur and a smart person. On 10th I told Sheomohan that we would bear the cost of treatment of his mentally sick wife. It will be around Rs.1,322 per month. Besides I have also given a sum of Rs.2000 for Citi scan of his wife's head. I have given advance for November, December and January to Ajju to release the amount part by part every fortnight as required. If I give it to Sheomohan he would spend otherwise. The Doctor says it will take about six months for her to cure. She is showing signs of improvement. Read the review of " Mahabharat in polyester", Which updates the earlier book namely "Polyester Prince" of 1998 by Hamisr Mcdonald. Visited Chetan who gave me a pen by which I have written the diary today. The approach to the toilet is low. I got it foam padded so that there is no injury to the head. Chetan is not well. He is operating from his residence. His legs are swollen. On 11th briefed the mason for slabbing the ceiling of a part of the house. He suggested we should give labor contract so that demolition part of the old roof is done expeditiously. After all the ceilings of the house are slabbed we can plan out the size of each room as per requirement and use of the house for a charitable purpose. Sheomohan's wife is much better. Ajju came and gave a sagacious advice. He said as to why we were investing so much amount in the repairs of the house. He further said that as we grew older it would be difficult for us to come to Fatehpur often and take care of the house. I would discuss this with Venita. On 12th we spent a total of Rs.1225 on the electrical repairs. On 13th Chetan and Ajju came. Raghunandan, our earlier share cropper, also came. Later his grand son brought 10Kgs of rice from the fields which earlier belonged to us and now were sold out to him. Raghunandan said that the fields were still belonged to us and he would continue to give a part of the produce every season. I appreciated his sentiment and accepted the rice. But I told him to bring not more than 5 Kgs whenever he brought it. Met SP Fatehpur and had high tea with him. I requested him to get a BPL card to Sheomohan if possible. He said he would help and told me send him to meet him.The Super Express train which was scheduled to come at 10.15 pm at Fatehpur, came next day at 3.30 am, late by over 5 hours. SHO,GRPS stayed with me at the Fatehpur railway station and saw me off. I proposed to send an email to chairman Railway board about the poor maintenance and attendance services which are now privatised. We reached New Delhi station at 2pm. The train was late by about 7 hours. On 15th met Bablu in his office and collected BSES bill which he had inadvertantly taken home. Visited Ajit opticians and gave Venita's specs for change of glasses. The power of glass used in left eye for reading is increased. Chistya came. Could not hold meeting with Kuber about his case as he was preoccupied. Met AP. On 16th visited Dental Wing of CGHS of Safdarjang hospital. Again met AP. On 17th attended the cremation of Sonu, eldest son of Sh.Mahesh Sharma at Ghazipur crematorium. Sonu died on 16th at 11 o'clock in the night due to sudden heart attack. He assisted me in my work. I have yet to pay him balance of Rs. 1500/- which he did not collect though I informed him through Sh.Mahesh Sharma. He left working with me after joining law in a Law College at Noida. He was sincere and a lovable boy, who was always and exclusively available to me to assist in my work. May his soul rest in peace and his family get fortitude to bear his loss. Mr. Tulsi who attended the cremation, canceled all his engagements for the day including one with me to brief him about Frigoglass case. I was to leave for Chandigarh on 18th , but had to cancel it as he said that he would meet us only at 6pm on 18th. Today was also ekadashi and I kept fast. On 18th met KTS in his chamber at 6.15pm and briefed him in detail about Frigoglass case, which is coming up for hearing on 19th November. Met Pravesh also. Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

27th October

Completed morning program. Got up at 3 am. Could not sleep after that. Generally I get up at 4am. I had taken Swami Ramdev's Aluvera. Was it due to taking the Aluvera in the evening today ? Venita also had similar experience and advised to take it in the morning. It is energizing, digestive and good for joints. The CGHS permitted me to undertake operation of cataract in my left eye at Center for Sight.I will undertake the operation after return from visit to Fatehpur. It does not need hospitalization. The center will release me after 2-3 hours of the operation.Sh. Chistya informed that he could not obtain letter from the then ADM, Lucknow as required for hearing in his suit for recovery. Now we will have to work out alternate pleas to reply to the counter of the respondents. Discussed with Kuber earlier and now will give him clearance for drafting of reply.

26th October

Completed morning program. Collected medicines from CGHS. Talked to the interns in the chamber. Today is Karva Chauth. It is also called husband's day. In this occasion the wives keep fast and after seeing the moon put tilak on the foreheads of their husbands. They garland them and touch their feet. The husbands bless them with eternal marital bond and bliss. It is a fast in which the ladies don't even take water during the day and like the Muslims during Ramjan they take enough water, sweets etc. before the sunrise. Even some unmarried girls keep fast for the long life of their prospective unknown would be husbands. Even some husbands keep fast for the long life of their wives. I have never kept one so far. Among the Hindus there is a belief that the marriages are pre-ordained and each one has his her partner somewhere who will meet one day for marriage. In a skit telecast by BBC today I saw how Chinese goods, particularly textiles, have flooded Italian markets. I thought it was happening in India only. It is happening all over the world. They are cheap, though not sturdy and lasting.

25th October

Completed morning program. Visited CGHS, collected medicines and approval for tests. Giya Ram Gupta had come earlier for his case by me in Delhi High Court. He informed today that he would stick to his earlier lawyer, that his lawyer was insisting for his continuance. It appears Giya Ram could not afford our fees. He was recruited as a DYSP in Delhi Police and had training with us. I quoted minimum. It was going to be the fees for juniors only. I don't take fee from Police officers. Giya Ram is a batch mate and question of taking fee from him does not arrive.

22nd to 24th October

On 22nd visited CGHS and collected medicines. It rained quite heavily with stormy wind. Venita went to the temple in the afternoon leaving some windows open. Luckily the glasses did not break. The roads are blocked due to fallen trees. We had to take alternate roads to reach home. On 23rd visited Safdarjang hospital and met first Dr. Lalwani, a consultant on eyes. He suggested cataract operation in the left eye. Second I met Dr. Kothari. He desired to inject into the bottom of my ring finger of my left hand as I have been having pain in it. I did not agree with him. I told him that I would come back to him after about a week. Then he wanted to give 3 injections into left knee. I said I had no problem in it. He said " Don't you have pain in it?". I told him that I did not have pain. I don't know how he guessed that I had pain in the left knee. Visited Dilli Hat, where Venita had already gone. In the coffee house at Cannaught Place I saw a worker dipping used cups and glasses in one bucket of water and keeping them back for use. I had taken a cup of filter coffee. I left it as I did not feel like taking it after having seen as to how they were cleaned in a bucket with dirty water. I advise all not to take coffee in the cup/glass of coffee house. I complained to the Coffee house people about the unclean manner in which the cups and glasses were being cleaned. Instead I would recommend to take coffee/tea in paper glasses. On 24th read the following about Zappers " There is surge in demand for fantasy, magic, supernatural story based books. Along comes diary of Wimpy Kid which documents a teen age boy's adventures in school. Indian teens are hooked to Artemis, Fowl, Harry Potter and Twilight series by Stephenie Mayer, where a young girl falls in love with a Vampire. While many grow up in fairy tales and epics they quickly graduate to popular fiction : from Sherlock Homes and Huckleberry Finn to Chetan Bhagat's One Night @ the Call Center and 2 States."
Unless we understand this mindset of Zappers we can't tune with them so that they listen Compromise and Retro generations.

19th October

On 19th attended CAT. DM Sharma's case was taken up at 2pm. The tribunal asked Sh. Sumit Bharadwaj, Adv. Supreme Court,to start the case. He could not do it well as he expected to commence from the point at which he left on the previous date. The advocate of the respondent volunteered to do it.Sh. Bharadwaj could not even clarify the points raised by the 2 members of the tribunal. It was a poor show. The pagination of his file did not match to the file in the tribunal. So the members were finding it difficult to take out references to various documents, necessary to understand the case. But the members said that on the grounds of parity and equity and a case law of the tribunal the applicant had a case for consideration. They directed the advocate of the respondent to consider seniority to the applicant either from the date of the deputation or absorption in CBI. The members also desired to know if CBI had appealed against ruling of the tribunal quoted by the advocate of Sh. DM Sharma. The advocate of the respondent said he would need a week time to find it out.The case was adjourned to 10th November. Outside the tribunal I suggested to Sh. Bharadwaj to page the case file after inspection of the case file maintained in the tribunal.I informed him that I would be out of station on 10th November.I'll request Sh.Atiar Singh Dey to be present in the hearing of the case on 10th. He has assisted me and knows all the relevant points of the case quite well.

16th to 18th October

On 16th visited SBI and updated the passbook. Now I am getting a total of 45% of my pay as DA. Barun is suffering from SEPTICEMIA.In common language it is known as blood poisoning, bacterial invasion, weakening of immune mechanism. He has recovered from the worst phase of Septicemia & is on way to recovery. Venita is staying at Gurgaon and regularly visiting the hospital to take stock of progress of his recovery since Tuesday the 12th October. She is so much concerned about Barun that she has forgotten her plants and even Ladoo Gopal. She presumes that I will take care of them and she does not have to worry. She thinks her presence in the hospital is necessary to give moral support to Barun's family. On 17th,Dashehra Day,lit Ravana in the Society premises and had a cup of coffee in Mc Donald's, Vikaspuri. On 18th visited Safdarjang hospital and showed my prostrate reports to Dr. AK Arora (Urologist). He suggested some more tests. I have to see Dr. Lalwani also for showing my eyes to him for removal of cataract. He had advised that it was not necessary and that he would review the matter after 6 months.Venita returned home after 5 days stay at Gurgaon. Retired to sleep at 10pm.

7th to 10th October

On 7th visited Safdarjang hospital and showed my broken tooth to the dental surgeon. She recommended RCT and filling. Met Vikas at Oberai Hotel over lunch. Vikas said we could meet there next day. I told him not to plan as my experience is that generally we could not keep upto the plan. Let the next get together remain unplanned. He felt disheartened. But I could not help. On 8th visited CGHS for approval of certain tests. At SBI got internet and cell banking done. GR Gupta desired to come to handover his case to me under the Public Premises act. I asked Vicky to assist me in the case. Sh. Gupta will come next day. Missed morning program except regular walk. Got so much absorbed in 20 kilometers walk competition of CWG on tv that the time passed unnoticed and lo !! it was 9.30 am. The commitment of the participants enthused me so much so that I was on a high through out the day. The whole day was spent in watching boxing, athletics, shooting, archery etc. events. On 10th wished and blessed Khyati on her 9th birthday. I had promised to get her passport by her 9th birthday and she got it on 11th. It could not come on 10th, her birthday, as it was Sunday.
Liked reading of the interview of Sam Pitroda, advisor to the PM on publi information, infrastructure and innovation during the week. In the interview published at page 34, supplement dated October 3-9, 2010,of the Indian Express, date 9th October 2010. The substance of the interview is "There is a pattern to the journey because you drive it. You design your destiny. It is not about waiting for somebody else to give you directions. The last time I had a boss was in 1974! After that, I never had one. I did whatever I wanted to!"... His idea of happiness "To get up in the morning and not to have to worry about what to do during the day"...About Karma " I am just one of 7 billion people. One destiny. You do your thing, then you die. Nobody will remember you in any case." About a major challenge... "it is all inside. I am not looking at any motivation outside. And I always do multiple things. So if something gets stuck I drop it and work on something else. It is a journey . There are no destinations."..."I had 2 quadruple bypass surgeries, I have four stents. I had cancer. So my lows have been very intense. But I go to hospital, get it fixed , then I am on the road again, back to normal."....Because you can always look forward to work, you create and enjoy it, whatever it is- building something, polishing your shoes, cleaning the floor, reading a book"..."there is no Saturday or Sunday."
I recommend reading of the interview to all. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

6th October

Completed morning program. Visited center for sight for Venita's eye checkup. We had got the appointment at 1200 hours, but Dr. Dinesh Talwar could see her only at about 1500 hours. Then what is the point in giving appointment? We could just inform that we are coming and whenever our chance comes we take it. In a similar way I was given appointment by Dr. Seth, Head of Cardiology, Escorts hospital for 1400 hours, but he saw me only at 1900 hours, keeping me waiting for full 5 hours. I pointed it out to Dr. Seth and requested him to streamline the system of appointments. He did not take my complaint kindly. Even he hinted me to be seen by his juniors. I said it was not acceptable. I further told him that I had been referred to him by Prof. RK Tandon of Sitaram Bhartiya hospital. He agreed to see me in future too.
I was impressed with the interview of Dr. Sam Pitroda, Advisor to the PM on Public Information, Infrastructure and Innovation, published in page no.34 of 'Eye Supplement of Indian Express' dated October 3-9, 2010. I recommended it to all for perusal. I would give a brief of it in my next blog. Retired to sleep at 2230 hours.

4th & 5th October

On 4th visited Pravesh's clinic in Greenpark Extension. I am told it is being wound up. It is sad. I don't know why Pravesh is closing it. I will ask him one day. Visited SBI , Parliament Street, for work. Could not meet the new AGM. He was calling on his seniors. I remember the comment of Sh.KPS Gill, who was then DIGP, when he noticed that I was calling on my senior officers after joining as Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, Guwahati. He said that it was better you should attend to your work and gradually meet your seniors also. It was not necessary for you to leave your new assignment and spend all your time in calling on only. Got a call from Naresh bhaisahab. He was quite sick for last 10 days, bitten by a phylerea mosquito. Now he is better. On 5th visited SBI,Parliament Street, for work. Also met Mr.Saxena, the new AGM. He was branch officer of Greater Kailash branch of SBI earlier. Appears to be green horn. He has joined this post on promotion. I am sure he will come up soon and give proper customer care service. The post of AGM is more of a customer care nature than of banking.Retired to sleep at 11pm.

30th Sep- 3rd Oct

On 30th visited Ajit Optician for repair to Venita's specs. Ayodhya verdict was given today. There is no reaction to the verdict resulting in law and order situation anywhere in the Country. Plaintiffs and defendants, aggrieved by the judgment ,proposed to file appeal in the Supreme Court. As it is first appeal , it will be admitted by the Supreme Court as a matter of course . The Muslim Law board says that it will file appeal as the judgment is against their Shariat Law. Hindus say that they will file appeal for ownership of entire land. Shombit Sengupta in his writeup in the Indian Express on Sunday 26th Sep says that consistency is important for a steady development. He further says that if we study Picasso or even Shakira, there is a consistency in their art. That is why they have achieved great name and fame.On 1st Oct i forgot to do Tarpan for ancestors. From the Prathma of the lunar month of Ashwin (krishnapaksh)to the end of the krishnapaksh it will be a month for Shradh. It is called Pitra paksh. I returned halfway ,did Tarpan and then started my journey for professional work. Yesterday (30th Sep)it was Saptami and i did Tarpan as usual and in addition Venita gave dry rations to the priest. My father had died on Saptami . Hence this daan to the priest. We give those things in daan which my deceased father liked to eat. Surendier, secretary to RTPS Tulsi adv. Chancigarh informed that Figoglass case is fixed for hearing on 1 Nov. Informed all concerned. I have booked railway tickets to Fathepur .I am leaving for Fathepur and retuning on 30th Oct. We can have a conference in connection with the case on 30th as i am returning early morning . I will discuss with KTS. On 2nd Oct i noticed i am walking faster in the morning walk. I have to complete 4 K.Ms. in 40 min. I completed it within it.I find the metabolism of the body opens up after 3 rounds of the park where i walk, that is, approximately a little over 2 k.ms. I had eaten less and plain food yesterday . When i take a bit of fried food , i find i cannot walk faster . and i complete four kilometers in about 43 mins instead of 40 mins. The junk food is gadd food, according to my late father . It will include puris/kauchris/chhole/bhatore/samosa and similar things. A plain and simple food is dal chapati vegetables and fruits and one could also take as much milk as he could digest. I was invited by Vikas for lunch in Hyatt Regency today. But my wife did not allow me to go. She said you should take full rest on a Saturday. She further said that Vikas was of the age of your eldest son, that how you could connect with him. I told her that i connect with him as i connect with my son. I apologized to Vikas . On 3rd Oct watched the opening ceremony of CWG. I was impressed with prince Charles marrying his present wife, much older to him and formerly, wife of a British army officer. His consistency in love for his present wife is admirable. He should not have married Diana. It appears his marriage with Diana was a royal compulsion . Retired to sleep at 11:45 pm

29th September

Venita's eyes were checked at the Center for Sight. She has been again called after 7 days for a check by Dr. Dinesh Talwar. I asked Dr. Dinesh Talwar as to how long we would keep on coming for checkup and injections. We have already been coming to the center for over 21 months and she had 3 injections in her right eye. It is quite painful. I suggested to Dr. Talwar that professor VS Gupta of Safdarjang hospital had suggested another injection. Dr.Talwar named (I can't spell the name)it and said it was not so good. He further said that Venita might have to come there for her entire life, that she was young (I told him she was 61.He told that at least she could hope to live for another 20 years, if not more) and that she would surely like to keep whatever vision was left in the right eye. I told him whether there was some other technology besides laser correction which he was presently using in the eye. He said there was none. We felt a bit depressed. We would now go to Shroffs, another well known name in consultancy relating to eyes. I also got my eyes tested by Dr. Dinesh Talwar. I have shown my eyes at Venu eye institute earlier besides to Dr. Lalwani of Safdarjang hospital.Venu eye institute and Dr. Dinesh Talwar suggested removal of cataract from my left eye. He referred me to Dr. Mahipal singh, CMD , Center for Sight, a specialist in cataract procedure. Dr. Mahipal Singh also suggested removal of the cataract from the left eye 1st and later from the right eye also.At present it was not necessary to take out cataract from the right eye. It may follow the left eye. Dr.Lalwani however suggested that no surgery was required as long as my vision was alright. He said he would see my eyes again after 6 months to review his advice. 6 months are already over. I will have to show the eyes to him again. In the mean time when I take Venita to Shroffs I will also show my eyes to them. I am told Shroffs are two brothers: one specializes in cataract procedure and the other in retina. I had to pay Rs.800/- to Dr. Talwar for showing my eyes as the permission from CGHS did not cover his consultation.
Due to CWG at DLTA the Center for Sight also had to face restrictions in parking of vehicles. Lot of policemen were there. Thapa had to park the car quite at a distance. We walked about 300 meters to board the car after the procedures at the center. While Venita went to Juri's place to look up her daughter born one year back, I came to the chamber for professional work. Juri is the elder daughter of Sh. Madan Bezbaruah. She has all the qualities of her father and none of his imperfections. 27th September was the 1st birthday of her daughter. She also has a son who is about 4 year old. She is PHD from an UK University, probably London University. I am not sure about it. Her father is my batch mate and a retired IAS officer. Our children and his children have grown up together when they were about 4-6 year old and are quite friendly to each other. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

28th September

On 28th Venita was given another Avastin injection. It is the 3rd one. Quite painful. But there is no alternative. Dr. Talwar said that we have to continue like this to save the eye. Or we can leave it. Then whatever little vision she has in the right eye will go. He called her for a check on 29th. The Center for Sight is located near the Delhi Lawn Tennis club, where CWG are taking place. Consequently in a part of the road near Bikaji Cama place and Safdarjang enclave, there are traffic restrictions and if you jump to the Commonwealth games lane they fine you Rs.1000/- minimum. About 400 people have been so fined in different parts of Delhi for jumping into the CWG lane. Now I am told that they can straight way send you to jail for violating this traffic restriction.I don't know how they can do it without making this traffic offense non bailable. As far as I know no traffic offense is non bailable. Chistya came and gave Rs.10,000/-. I told him to go to Sh. Atiar and give the money to him for filing his case in the court. The case could not be filed for non payment by him for a long time. He agreed to pay the balance of Rs. 5,000/- shortly. He also agreed to pay a sum of Rs. 5000/- to Sh. Kuber as now he has to go to Saket, where his case is transferred from Tis Hazari courts. Earlier it was easier for Sh.Kuber to go to Tis Hazari court from the Patiala house court or High court/Supreme Court. Now the court in Saket in a diffrent direction & he has to drive to Saket, some extra miles.Gave Khyati's photographs to Sh. DM Sharma at Yashwant place. Venita went back home after the Avastin injection. I followed her after professional work in the chamber. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

24th to 27th September

On 24th went to Ajit Opticians for the repair to the specs. The office of DM Sharma is at Yashwant place.Gave him Khyati's form for passport. Venita wanted Dasavatar (10 incarnations of God) for the temple in the society from Lapakshi, which is Andra Pradesh Govt. emporium. These are made on the wood and adequately painted and look good. The entire group of Dasavatar cost about Rs.1,800/-. Bought some banana chips fried in coconut oil from Kerala emporium nearby. Read the review of Keith Jeffry's M16 : The history of secret intelligent service 1909-1949 in different papers. I am appalled to know that Somerset Maughum, Graham Green, Arthur Ransom, were staff members of secret service M16. Comton Mackenzie, Malcolm Muggerdge & philosopher AJ Freddie Ayer were the many exotic characters who agreed to spy for Britain and have been revealed in the book. The book also points out that semen was used as invisible ink. It would not react to iodine vapor. On 25th attended a party in continuation of Babua's birth celebrations at Gurgaon. It had been postponed due to absence of Bablu, who was in Helinski on 15th September, the birth date of Babua. Today he has returned early morning. There were about 25 persons in the party besides 7-8 children. Silku and Khyati, Sunita and her family came. Others were the families known to Neha & Bablu. Babua was extremely excited. He was all the time carrying 3 knives and 2 tiny candles in his hands since morning for cutting the cake and lighting the candles. He got a number of gifts. All the people were from the private sector. I saw Yash, son of Tunu and Gauri for the 1st time. He is just like his father. The snacks were stale and there was an apology of Barbeque. The vegetarian soup was tasteful but had a little more salt. The food was by & large good to eat. I won't say it was delicious. The booking was for 35 persons. But less than 35 came. We had to pay charges for 35 which were a little over 10,000. On the whole it was a lively party. The approach to the restaurant, a little over 2 kms, was in bad shape and bumpy. In fact it is a sorry sight to see bad roads lined by beautiful multi-storey buildings. The cake was egg less. It was cut by Babua with the help of Khyati, his cousin sister. Khyati gave 1st bite to Babua and I gave next bite to him and to Khyati. It was quite tasty. I think cakes with eggs are tastier. Khyati was jumping around. She will be 9 on 10th October. Subhash could not come. Barun and his family did not come. All others invited came except Priyal and her family, a good friend of Neha & her mausa and his family also could not make it. Priyal has bought a house near the restaurant for Rupees 2.5 Crores recently in a posh area. But the road to it is in horrible condition. Silku looked alright. Both Bablu and Silku need to exercise to knockout their fat. On 26th talked to Pilku and Ruchi. Abhishree is going out in a school trip for a week and is being trained to prepare sandwiches and her bed. Pilku is helping her. He was to go to New York and Washington. He has postponed it and in the mean time deputed another officer in his place. Sh. KK Saxena left for Jaipur after a stay of over 15 days with Neha. On 27th attended a musical program in the SSB mess in RK Puram. Thapa is sick. Met Sh. Rao, DG SSB also. Had to postpone appointment with Shroffs, eye specialists, today for showing Venita for a second opinion on her right eye as I could not undertake visit to South Delhi twice. The appointment was in the morning and musical soiree in the evening. Retire to sleep at 11pm.

22nd & 23rd September

On 22nd collected medicines from CGHS. Visited SBI for work. Read the review of "Freedom" by Jonathan Franze. He makes 2 points.
1) American culture is over obsessed with personal freedom.
2) He portrays an America where people are unhappy and spiritually stunted.
I liked the following writeup of Sh. Sunil Jain, in Indian Express, dated September 22nd at page 10,"India has a long way to go, and various systems are in a mess, whether in public health care or education. But let us not be so hard on ourselves by 1st world standards to 3rd-2nd world income." Everybody was critical of Sh.Bhanot of the organizing committee of CWG 2010, when he said that our standards of hygiene and cleanliness may not be the same as those of western nations. But I think he was sounding what Sunil Jain said in his aforesaid writeup. On 23rd collected medicines from CGHS and visited SBI for work. In a writeup in the Indian Express today, it is said that in democracies it is difficult to put certain number of people in one direction & that we are not working on our strengths. Rather we are waiting for China to fail on their weaknesses.
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

17th to 21st September

On 17th visited Escorts hospital to collect Venita's blood report. Except analysis of vitamin-D report from her blood, other reports were given by the hospital. The vitamin-D analysis report would be ready on 18th evening. The appointment with Dr. Anoop Mishra, diabetes expert is to be taken after 10th October to show him the vitamin-D analysis report. Tomorrow is the appointment with Dr. AK Agarwal of RML. Shanti Siddharthan, branch manager SBI, Vikaspuri is transferred on promotion to Jaipur. Her husband is joining a Think Tank in Washington. She will ultimately be shifting to Washington by November end. She was a great help at SBI, Vikaspuri. On 18th Dr.AK Agarwal saw Venita and changed some medicines after seeing the blood report. A minor accident took place on 17th due to short circuit in the Kaff stove. The Indane Gas people came and examined it. They said the gas line was in order and advised to call the Kaff people to inspect the stove. The Kaff technician came to correct the burners. But he could not open it. He said he would come next day. On 19th could not go for a walk as it was raining quite heavily. In the Indian Express dated 19th September at page 9, Shombit Sengupta writes," In all three generational groups there exist all 8 behavioral clusters-low key, value seeker, sober , flamboyant, critical, novelty seeker, techy and gizmo lover. Digital zappers supremely influence everything, so connecting to them is crucial for the future. The compromise generation tries hard to follow Zappers in being trendy but does not quite get there. The retro generation is generally stiff". I don't know in which behavioral cluster/(s) I should put myself. If I can judge myself more or less correctly I am a mixture of value seeker, sober , critical & novelty seeker. I am sure I am not low key, flamboyant, techy or gizmo lover. I can correlate myself with compromise and zappers equally well. I find difficult to correlate with retro generation. It is perhaps because of my service background.
On 20th collected report of Venita from Escorts hospital and medicines from CGHS. Could not bring her insulin injections as I forgot to bring the ice pack with which the insulin has to be carried home. KTS is straining himself too much. I will have to talk to him. I told Mahesh about it. On 21st visited Center for Sight for Venita's Avastin injection. But we had forgotten to bring the injection from home. I requested the center to loan me one on payment and on receipt of injection pay me back. Though they had agreed on a previous occasion, this time they did not. I therefore took 28th for injecting Avastine in the right eye of Venita. I also took appointment with Dr. Shroff for a second opinion on 27th.
I read the review of "Eat, Pray, Love", by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is a beautiful novel, a part of it is filmed in India. The heroin of the film, being impressed by the atmosphere in an Asram of South India where it was filmed has become a Hindu along with her husband and children. The novel followed the discovery of self by the author after her divorce. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

16th September

Completed morning program. Visited Escorts hospital for Venita's tests as desired by Dr. AK Agarwal. The cost of one test, namely 1,25 Dihydroxy Vitamin D is Rs.1990/- besides there are some other tests. The report of Sugar level is not at all satisfactory and will call for a review of medicines for Sugar control. Hemoglobin level is almost normal as it is 11.2. It should be min. 12. I have to show it to Dr. AK Agarwal on 18th, when I meet him along with Venita. Retired to sleep at 11.15 pm.

14th & 15th September

On 14th tried to contact Dr. Sunil Kumar, M.S.M. Cb.(Urology),Senior Surgeon, Safdarjang hospital. But could not contact him. He had prescribed Urimax-D tablets for reduction of the size of prostate gland in 2004, when its size was 31.2cc. It reduced to 22.7cc in 2007 & increased to 28cc in 2008. Pre void residual urine was insignificant in 2004. It became 16cc in 2007 and 9cc in 2008. I had showed the reports to Dr.Sunil kumar on 21/07/09. After seeing the 3 reports each of 2004,2007 & 2008, he advised I should stop taking Urimax-D tablets and desired to review after 6 months. I have got the PSA test done and it is 0.64 as against the range of 0.0-4.4. I have not been able to contact him. Some persons in the Safdarjang hospital told that he was transferred to RML hospital. He could not be traced there also. I have requested some persons to find out if he has resigned and opened his own clinic. I will try for another few days. If he cannot be located I will show the reports to another Urologist. At present I have no problem due to slightly enlarged prostrate and the PSA is well within the normal range.
On 15th attended a birthday party of my grand son at Gurgaon. His maternal Grand-Father, Grand-Mother & Mousi had come from Jaipur and Mumbai, respectively to wish him Happy birthday. The flat was decorated with colorful balloons, multicolor stars & stencils. Babua, my grand son had invited his class mates. They played in the play well corner of the Mc. Donald's followed by a get together with their mothers in the restaurant. In all his 10 friends came with beautiful gifts. There were return gifts to them and all of them were putting on colorful caps and clothes. Babua was quite excited,so were we. Today he is 4. We left for Vikaspuri at about 8.30 pm.
In the morning during Vipassana I had prayed for his long life, health and bright future. So also I prayed for all the children. My second son, Siddharth Shrivastava (Silku), based in Gurgaon, could not come with his family as he was preoccupied in some urgent work. His wife was blessed with another daughter about a month back. He said he would join in the party on 25th, when Parikshit Shrivastava (Bablu), my 3rd son returns from Finland. I told my daughter-in-law that I would pay for the party. The in laws of Bablu are staying back for the party till 26th September. But their daughter Shivani, Babua's Mausi, is leaving for Mumbai on Sunday, the 19th. Babua wanted us to stay back at Gurgaon for the night. We persuaded him to allow us to go back to Vikaspuri with a promise that we will stay back next time when we come to Gurgaon. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

13th September

On 13th obtained approval for the treatment of Venita from CGHS, Pandara road. Completed my last Will and Wish. I have to send a copy of the Will to Vikas whom I have appointed as executor of the Will. My friend of 50 year vintage about whom I wrote in my blog earlier again met me to tell about his failed married life. He asked me as to why his wife had not poisoned him if she wanted to get rid of as she disliked him.I told him to get over these negative feelings about his wife. No wife poisons her husband unless she has a paramour to take care of her. My friend said that his wife had also an affair but the person ditched her and married another person. I told him that it established what I told him that she had none to take care of her as her lover left her & perhaps was not serious of the affair. I further told him that you were now married over 50 years, forget the past, take care of her and live happily for whatever years remain for both of you. My friend did not feel convinced and went away without telling anything. After his departure, I felt I could not convince him of my advice. His is a very sad case. I don't think he will come to me ever.
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

10th to 12th Septemeber

Completed the morning program. Visited Safdarjang hospital and collected endorsement for eye treatment of Venita. She is under treatment of Dr. Dinesh Talwar of Center for Sight, Safdarjang Enclave, New Delhi, a CGHS approved center. She has been under his treatment for now about 2 years. Her right eye is the subject of treatment. She had 2 laser corrections. But after each there is again a relapse. Now a 3rd avastin injection will be given in the right eye. It is a painful procedure. But now she bears it. We have to keep on trying so that she does not become blind in the right eye. It is a diabetic effect. Now her diabetes is under control after we started treatment of Dr. Anoop Misra of Fortis hospital. He is quite expensive and not approved by CGHS. So we have to bear the expenses. It does not matter as long as she is showing signs of improvement. Attended 2nd Friday lunch of the month of September at CIOS mess. Just a few officers of the IAS and other services came. Madan Bezbaruah, close to me, came. Prior to lunch we had a get together of IPS officers of the batch, available at Delhi. In all 9 IPS officers attended. Three could not.We have been together for the last 46 years and from our prime youth to 70 years. It has been a long journey full of sweet and sad memories. Quite a few have left us for their heavenly abode and our journey is also likely to end later or sooner. Let us continue to spend as much as we can and help each other in developing mentally and spiritually. Because of 9 IPS officers the number of the batch mates, attending lunch, went up to about 16. At least 15 is the norm. Otherwise we have to pay a lump sum for the lunch. If 15 people are there then each one of us has to pay Rs.300/-. If the number is less we have a contributory deposit from which the balance is paid. More important is meeting and renewing an association which is as big as 46 years now. Next get together is proposed in November where the spouses will also be invited. I have been told to get BSF mess, Nizamuddin, for the get together. I have told them to give the firm dates for booking the mess.Curiously the initiative for the get together with spouses is being taken by our batch mates who have lost their spouses. I think by seeing us with our spouses they will get a vicarious satisfaction. After all we have been together for 46 years. So an affinity has developed which is human and does not need any elaboration.
On 12th it was Hrishi Panchami, when all the Sapt Hrishi's are invoked and offerings & prayers made for well being. Venita participated in the puja, which continued for over 2 hours when she had to sit on the ground. Later she complained of back pain and said she won't be able to go to Escorts hospital for tests as proposed. Retired to sleep at 11.15 pm.

9th September

Visited Safdarjang hospital. A pair of crutches was given to a disabled young man by me on request of an officer of rehabilitation department of Safdarjang hospital.A photograph was taken of me and others. It was not prearranged. Now a news item will be given. I think it is not necessary. I could not refuse it as I am under treatment there. We should believe in doing more than in publicity. All should be done in a spirit of service, which is not visible so much these days in the society. Everyone wants publicity only for anything that is done by them, may be, in discharge of their bounden duty.Revised the 'Will'. After showing it to Venita I will finalize it. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

8th September

On 8th Venita had OCT (Angiography of eyes). Her right eye which has been twice laser operated has again shown signs of relapse. Now she will have to take another Avastine injection for corrective action. Sent an email to DG Health Services, Govt. of India, reporting denial of permission for eye examination in a CGHS approved center on recommendation by a Govt. consultant. Had cup of coffee in Mc.Donald's, Khan Market along with Venita. Retired to sleep at 11pm.

7th September

On 7th an old friend of mine met me and narrated sad story of his family life. His was an arranged marriage about 50 years back. They are to celebrate golden Anniversary shortly. But I did not see any enthusiasm in him. He said that his wife disliked him right from the 1st day of the marriage & still continued to dislike him. I asked him what the reason could be. He wanted to tell something but restrained from telling. He further said that his wife tried in every possible way to leave him, but he had stuck onto her thinking that marriage was sacrament and could not be done away with. He was quite a sad man. He further said that she wanted him to leave her and go. But he told her where he could go. He could not commit suicide as that was against the law of nature. So life is going on for him, not so much of concern for him as for her whose wish to live without him is not getting fulfilled. I said that you have lived together so long, why not carry on for some more time. He agreed telling that there was no alternative.
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

3rd to 6th September

On 3rd could complete my morning program. However pranayam time had to be reduced drastically in order to complete all other exercises, asans, 40 minute walk to get ready by 10am to go to the court/chamber. Tried to contact CGHS officers to inquire about my complaint no. C-54978, in connection with refusal by CMO, Pandara road, CGHS for eye examination in a CGHS approved center. Dr.Mukesh Verma, with whom I exchange emails regularly on various issues, advised me to approach CPIO CGHS for action taken by them. I will take follow-up action in consultation with him. There is no DG CGHS, there is only one DG health services and he looks after the CGHS also. There is one ADG CGHS who at present is Dr. Dinesh Bhatnagar. His telephone number is 23061467. The Director CGHS is Dr. Parekh and his number is 23062800. The immediate superior to the CMO Pandara road is Addl. Director CGHS. His telephone number is 23515934. At present Dr.Tejan is holding the post. Despite my repeated efforts to talk to them, I could not get any one on the line. Either they are busy in meetings, having lunch or not available. I will pursue to contact them as there is no other alternative. On 4th we had rotational lunch in the house of Sh.Caire in flat no.259 along with Sarvashri SK Dutta & RC Jha & families. Neha had come with Babua. I told Babua the story of vikings. He liked it. Mr. Dutta & Mr. Caire said that they could not open attachments to my mails. I don't have their phone numbers. Jaymith should talk to them when I have their numbers. On 5th it was drizzling in the morning but I had my walk for 45 mins. Vikas rang up for lunch on Saturday or Sunday. As I was having lunch with some persons in the society could not go with him. Did not attend the executive committee meeting of the society of which I am a member. There is no pleasure in it. I go there when they insist for my presence for supporting an issue in which I have concurrent view. The DYSP(Retired) Sh.Kaushik, gave me a loud salutation when I was walking in the park. I am sure there is something behind this salutation. Let us see. Paid Rs.200 to the security officer Chopra for tea to guards. I pay this amount every month. In a discourse of Brahmakumaris, it was suggested that we should be creative in our dealings with relationships. That will be possible provided we have love, compassion and good will for all. On 6th I realized that I should increase the time of pranayam. In particular anulom vilom is quite useful. Retired to sleep at 10.45pm.

1st & 2nd September

On 1st collected Stevi O Cal two jars full of powder. I find it will be convenient to use Stevi powder. The Stevi O Cal in pouches gets solidified and sometimes does not dilute when used. It is said to be a food supplement. I think I can also use it. Told Venita to use it in all her recipes as a substitute to sugar. Visited SBI for work. Could not contact Additional Director, Central zone, CGHS for direction to CMO, CGHS, Pandara Road to permit me to undertake eye examination in a CGHS approved center. Could not sleep after 0130 hours of 2nd September. I will try to make it up later during the day. Did pending tits-bits and Vipassana. Recited Gayatri Mantra for quite sometime when I could not sleep during the early hours of 2nd Sep. Janmastami was celebrated on 2nd. It was celebrated yesterday at Vrindaban, it being a Wednesday with Rohini Nakshatra. The Nakshatra continued today also till 10 am. It was celebrated in Mathura today. I joined in the celebrations in the temple within the premises of the society at midnight. About 100 people including children attended and chanted the name of Krishna. Spiritually the birth of Krishna at midnight signifies the end of night of sorrow and beginning of morning of light and happiness. Images of the celebrations were shown live in various tv channels. I sent good wishes on the day to about 20 persons. Only 5 of them responded. Retired to sleep at 0045 hours of 3rd September.

25th to 31st August

On 25th visited Safdarjang hospital for endorsement of refraction test in the Center for Sight. Visited CGHS and collected medicines. Amitabh Thakur, SP,CBI, came. Later met him in the Special unit/CBI, where I had gone to meet the DIG. The DIG was out to Ghaziabad for delivering lecture. This is a unit of CBI where I worked from 1985-1989. I visit it at least once in a year as a matter of good will gesture. In the Special unit met Sh.Kashyap, who received President's Medal for Distinguished Services. He was DYSP when I was DIG. Met Sh.Bhanu also who is SPI.
On 26th we were to have a quiet lunch at a restaurant selected by Neha. But could not go there as Babua was not well. Instead of going to the chambers I decided to go to Gurgaon to spend time with him. We returned after Bablu came back from office. At the end of 71 years I feel no problems in my health and I am still working 15/16 hours everyday. I hope to meet a healthy end. On 27th Subhash noted that his email id is hacked. Today is the birthday of Silku. Wished him long life. Relationship develops in the mind. It is oneness with the soul/energy of the other. Attended IPS dinner at the BSF mess Nizamuddin. Met the daughter of my close friend's elder sister who is now married to Sh.SC Sinha,DG,NIA. It was a grand get together. We could meet our old friends. On 28th visited CGHS, Pandara road. The CMO did not give permission for the refraction test in the Center for Sight. I will have to report it to CGHS headquarters. On 29th Sunita & Subhash came for lunch. They brought a gift for me. On 30th visited Neha and thereafter Silku at Gurgaon to look up the grand daughter born on 19th August at 11am. It is the 12th day of her life. Gave a 10gm gold coin to her as we have done to each of our grand children in the past. On 31st visited SBI Vikaspuri, PNB Vikaspuri & SBI PBB parliament street for work. Lodged a complaint to the Additional Director and CGHS helpline regarding refusal to give permission by CMO Pandara park, CGHS. The following line of Albert Einstein struck my attention:
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

23rd to 24th August

On 23rd I could not go for walking as it was raining quite heavily. The society temple had been decorated quite well on the last Monday of the month of Shravana. Visited Safdarjang hospital and showed the hand and the knee to Dr.Kothari. He said the hand should be alright on its own within 2-3 months. He had injected in my left elbow about a couple of months back. The bone injection was extremely painful. He had then told me that my elbow would be alright soon. There was nothing/no pain for 2 months. I experience now extreme pain particularly in the night. Dr.Kothari says it will all be over after 2-3 months. I think I will have to consult someone else now for my problem. The knee however is improving and I can now do Bagrasan without any difficulty. Today I got up at about 3.10 am & could not sleep after that. Retired to sleep at about 9.40 pm. On 24th visited Dr.Agarwal's dental clinic for final check-up of capping of 4 right lower teeth. He said that capping had been done well. I should come to the clinic whenever required or after 6 months for a check-up. Met Pravesh and collected IT file from Sh.Das. Pravesh has not yet recovered from the shock of IT raid quite sometime back. I advised him to forget and forgive. Visited MMTC shop and CGO complex. The rate of 1gm of 22 carat gold jewelery is Rs. 2200/- including vat. There is no jewelry of less than 12 gms. Venita wanted to buy a gold chain for the second daughter of Silku within Rs.7000-8000. Nothing is available in this shop within that amount. Informed her. She said she would buy it from Gold Sukh, Gurgaon, where the chains of 2-3 gms were available. Visited Nath chemists for change of Stevia-O-Cal. They changed and said that even loose pouches which had solidified stevia powder could be changed by them. Its a good gesture on the part of the company. Told them to get me 2 boxes of stevia powder. Jaymith informed that the office was closed due to Rakhi and will open after 3-4 pm. Bought some cheese from Sai sales, Chanaykapuri. Retired to sleep at 10pm.

20th to 22nd August

On 20th visited Dr. Agarwal's clinic for final touches to the capping of the 4 teeth. Dr.Agarwal's wife did the capping in a highly professional manner. I was impressed and congratulated her for an excellent job done.Dr. Agarwal told me that she had taken care of his teeth too. But I don't understand as to how his teeth were so blackish. Dr.Agarwal has a negroid looks. I will ask his wife when I go to the clinic on 24th about it (about teeth and not about his negroid looks). Silku informed that he had been blessed with a daughter at 11 am on 19th August. He informed me after about 24 hours. I told him that it was a great news and that I bless her. A number of telephone calls and messages were received by us congratulating for the birth of 5th grand child to us. On 21st visited custom shop and bought an umbrella, probably made in China or Korea. But the the Chinese letters had been defaced. I don't know the reason. Perhaps the dealer or the manufacturers do not want it to be known that it was manufactured in China or Korea for whatever reasons. The Sony LCD bought by my wife as birthday gift to me is in fact from the interest of the gift of money which she got from her mother and not from our joint account. I dint get any dowry nor we demanded it during our marriage, but I feel as if I am getting it now unsolicited. Last year she gave me a Nokia cellphone costing about Rs.20,000/-. This year it is again a costly gift . If she continues to give me such gifts during the remaining years of my life I think I would have got quite a bit of dowry after 43 years of married life. So let it be. I am not asking for it. The LCD however did not reach today due to heavy rains in Gurgaon. The dealer informed that it would reach me next day. I got a reading light fixed over my bed. I myself went to the Tilak Nagar market to search for one. But could not get better than what the society electrician had brought. In a discourse on the tv Brahma Kumari Shivani answered the following eternal questions as follows:
1. Who are we? Ans: We are consciousness/energy.
2. What is the purpose of life? Ans: As our true nature is peace and happiness, the purpose of our life is to create happiness and peace.
3. What is a goal? Ans: It is relative to time and space.
4. What are the values of life? Ans: Purity, Happiness and Peace.
We can ponder over the above and come to our own conclusions. Good food for thought. On 23rd the LCD arrived and was installed by me in the room where Venita works and sleeps. She dint object to it. Had to pay additional Rs. 7800/- as we decided to buy a bigger LCD. Venita had bought 22" inches LCD which I thought was small for the room and therefore I suggested her to buy a 26" LCD promising to pay the additional balance amount required for it. She agreed. Dr.B.Prasad and his family came for lunch. Mrs.Prasad brought beautiful Rajanighanda flowers. Could not go for the dinner of Gaurave as felt quite tired after a long pre and post lunch sitting together with Dr. Prasad and his family.

6th to 19th August

On 6th visited Safdarjang hospital and showed the cardiology test reports to Dr. Sandeep Bansal. He said that the additional medicine prescribed by Dr.Seth was in fact for chest pain and may not be taken. Today is Ekadashi and I have kept fast. Venita left for Allahabad by Duronto Express tonight and will leave for Delhi back by the same train in the night tomorrow to reach on Sunday morning. Felt a bit breathless. Will consult Dr.Sandeep Bansal if it persists. Otherwise I am comfortable. The writeup in the Indian Express on 7th points out that dried Apricots are rich in magnesium, are stress buster and natural muscle relaxant. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts lower blood pressure and boost immune system. The oranges also reduce stress and return blood pressure to normal level. Spinach remove deficiency in magnesium. The deficiency in magnesium causes migraine headaches, a feeling of fatigue. One cup of Spinach is the daily need of the body. These are some of the points I noted from the newspaper. Watched the cricket match between Sri Lanka & India. On 8th Venita returned from Allahabad. The Duronto Express was late by four and half hours. The culture connect marketing is needed to sell your wares, so says Sh. Sombit Sengupta in a write up in the Indian Express. On 9th visited Dr.Agarwal's clinic for the root canaling of the teeth number 6&7. Dr.Agarwal said that perhaps root canaling of tooth no. 7 may not be necessary. He will decide it later. On 11th visited Safdarjang hospital and CGHS for collection of permissions for tests and also medicines. Met Dr.R Tandon in the Sitaram Bharatiya Institute of Science and Research. He suggested a capsule in lieu of four tablets I take now ever since my angioplasty in 2004. He further said that I should get another HBAC test done after sometime to watch the sugar level. The fasting and PP sugar are normal. Fasting is 93 and PP is 133, which are in the normal level. I have been consulting Dr.Tandon as the final word in my treatment. He gives a sober and professional advice. On 12th visited Safdarjang hospital to collect endorsement of eye test of Venita. Met Agnihotri. Jain has joined as new RC of Meghalaya house. Met him too. Bought 5 cartons of Stevia O Cal for Venita. I had to search a number of chemist stores and ultimately got it in the Nath chemist shop in CP. On 13th joined the batch mates over 2nd Friday lunch in the COIS. There were in all 18 batch mates including VR Kohli and Naresh Saxena. On 15th hoisted the National flag in the premises of the Arunodaya housing society where I live. I have been doing it from 1998 when the National flag was hoisted on the Independence day first time. I occupied my flat in the society without any wood work as I had no money for it. Even for electrical work I had to take loan from an acquaintance. Later for my work in UNDCP I was paid Rs.60,000 and I could return the loan. Some of my friends whom i contacted for loan did not give. I had then retired. It is only after I earned some money in the legal profession that I could get the wood work done. I have remained president of the society for over 8 years during which 304 flats came up. In fact I had to strengthen the foundations of some of the blocks of flats as these were not adequately provided for. It was hard work for me along with my other colleagues of the management committee. During a brief speech,I appealed to members to keep in view the comfort of others. On 16th sent a scanned copy of the news item published in the Times of India regarding fraudulent withdrawal from the accounts in UK. On 17th visited Dr.Agarwal's dental clinic for capping of the four lower teeth no. 4,5,6 & 7. On 18th again visited Dr.Agarwal's dental clinic for check up. Visited Kairali and bought some coconut fried banana chips etc. On 19th there was a get together at Gurgaon for Pramod and his family who are leaving for Morocco on 20th as their elder son is posted there. Venita attended it. I could not go.

4th & 5th August

On 4th visited State Bank of India, Parliament Street. Sanjaya rang up for sending a status report of the Frigoglass case to their auditors. Sent the same. Felt feverish and tired, took a dysprin which relieved me. On 5th visited Dr. Mishra to show him the requisite reports of Venita for treatment of her diabetes. He charged me Rs.1500/- as his consultation fee. He is the most expensive consultant I have come across so far. But his approach to Venita's problem is comprehensive and unlike of the other consultants. I hope his treatment will work and the level of blood sugar of Venita reduce. Dr. Mishra is the head of Fortis group of hospitals in NCR and also has his own clinic. We saw him in his clinic. The following write-ups in the Indian Express dated August 4 at the page nos. 10 & 11 are revealing, caught my attention and are given below:
1) Jaithirth Rao in page 10.
"I think it is a mistake to categorize India as a soft State. It is certainly not a hard one. It is flexible one with deep survival instinct. Our science school teacher would tell us that grass blows with the breeze but never gets uprooted however strong the wind."
2) David Brooks at page 11.
"There are two ways of thinking about life - one centers on the individual and the other on circumstances."
3)Ajit Deval at page 11.
"The majority of encounters are mostly to murderous attacks on security personnel. On an average 1,200 policemen get killed every year."
The Indian Express carries thought provoking write-ups in its center page almost everyday and may be read by us as far as possible.
Retired to sleep at 10.45 pm.

3rd August

Submitted signed copies of ITR's to Sh.Das,CA to Bangalore, as per rules. Spent one hour with Pravesh. He has been going through a period of stress. He felt grossly relieved after talking to me. I will have to visit him quite often. He opens up with me or another friend. Sent a traffic accident report to the Commissioner Police. It occurred near Tuglak road Police Station on 2nd August.
Retired to sleep at 11pm.

30th July to 2nd August

On 30th, visited CGHS dispensary on Pandara road. Met Dr. Tomar. He said the fungus on the right side joint of the lips was due to lack of Vitamin B-complex. A couple of days earlier he had told that it was due to allergy. At that time when I told him that a senior physician, Dr. Godpayle, had informed me earlier that the fungus was invariably due to deficiency of vitamin B-complex,Dr.Tomar had insisted that it was due to allergy and not due to deficiency of vitamin B-complex.The doctors have great egos. They would not go with the opinion of others. I think that the conflicts in society these days are due to egos and not so much on any other factor. Underwent root canalling of my teeth number 6 & 7. I will have to come again tomorrow. It continued for over one & half hour.
On 31st again went to Dr.Agarwal's dental clinic and had RCT, which is a technical & abbreviated expression of root canalling of teeth. The root canalling of the other tooth will start from Monday the 9th August. Today the dentist, did not have to give anesthesia. I felt no pain today. The cost of root canalling of one tooth is Rs.2600/- & its topping cost Rs. 3000/- Rs.4000/- per tooth. Although I would not have to pay the cost of root canalling but I will have to pay the cost of topping of the teeth. The CGHS will pay the cost of root canalling. The CGHS rate is Rs.1200/- for root canalling per tooth where as others have to pay Rs.2600/- per tooth. It has been raining heavily today all over Delhi. The roads are clogged with water and the movement of traffic is very slow.
On 1st after haircut ordered preparation of the photographs of Amolikaa & Abhishree, sent by Ruchi by email, for membership of Army head quarters Equitation school. Venita said it would be waste of Rs. 2000/- required for becoming members of the school by the grand daughters as they would hardly avail of it. They are girls and we should coach them in music & art rather than in horse riding. She has a point. I will discuss with Pilku and decide thereafter.Sent messages to friends on the friendship day which is celebrated all over the world on the 1st Sunday of each August.
On 2nd I repeated the following message to Subhash, Pravesh, Agnihotri & Bezbaruah, received from Sanjaya :
" A SUPERB FRIENDSHIP LINE
'I want you to be with me only two times in my life'
'1st now & 2nd forever'

HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY..."
I received replies from KTS and Vikas. Pravesh did not reply as he was going through some difficult time. Agnihotri does not know how to send sms. He apologized for the non reply. I think Subhash & Bezbarua must be passing through some problems. I will talk to them. We have stopped talking to each other and believe only in sending emails. We are missing the direct touch with each other. That way Venita cannot send email or sms and she relies in talking to her circuit of friends & relations. Visited Dr. Seth, the principal Cardiologist ,Escorts hospital. He impressed me. He saw my blood, echo and stress thallium reports and prescribed one more medicine in addition to 4, I am already taking. He asked me to see him after 6 months with the same reports. He has kept the CD of my Angiography at Max hospital in 2008 and after seeing it he will return. I had to wait for about 4 hours that is from 3pm to about 8 pm, when the appointment with him was at 3.10 pm. I pointed out this to him and requested for streamlining the procedure so that the persons don't have to wait for more than an hour or so. He did not take my advise kindly. But at the time of leaving him I asked him to ignore my 4 hour comment to keep him in good humor. He was quite happy. As I said above the doctors, and all of us have big egos and would not like anything against them. So is the life and we have to put up with it.

22nd to 29th July

The draft suit in the matter of Brijesh Srivastava with all annexures is sent to Vikas on 22nd for filing as Atiar could not file it, but he drafted it. Brijesh has been inquiring about it,to which I have not been able to give a convincing reply. I hope it will now be filed by Vikas and due process of law start. Atiar is shy of appearing in the courts as he feels that his English pronunciation may not be understood. But he has to get rid of this complex and start appearing in courts. He is now practicing for over 5 years.
Visited Escorts hospital for tests on 23rd. Venita could not complete Ultrasound of abdomen & now she will have to come on 24th for the purpose. Again Visited Escorts hospital on 24th for Venita's test. The test reports, received by us, do not indicate anything significant.
On 25th we had a conference with Mr.K.T.S. Tulsi, Sr.Advocate, in the matter of Frigoglass case. Sh.RTPS Tulsi could not attend due to sickness. Venita went to Gurgaon by cab and attended Puja in the house of our son. She returned at about 8pm.
On 26th arrived Chandigarh and talked to Sh.RTPS Tulsi about the court and item numbers. The bench is again changed for hearing the case on 27th. Now the new bench will have to be 1st told about the entire case since beginning. This is perhaps 7th or 8th bench which is hearing the case, a mockery of justice. Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, who headed the bench was quite impressive.I found him as the 1st judge in High Court who does not grant adjournment unless there are unavoidable circumstances and emergency. All the cases he heard in my presence were disposed of in one way or the other. There was no spoon feeding of the advocates as also no concessions what so ever. I wish all the judges follow him. If it is done much of pendency in the courts will go. In our case he did not follow what the earlier court had ordained as verbally told by us.Verbal description of it was not acceptable to him. It had not been so recorded in the order sheet. He therefore decided to place our case in the regular list for disposal. Though this will delay disposal as we will again line up for our case to come for hearing, but to me it is quite fair and just.
On 28th collected Venita Ultrasound report from Escort hospital and also underwent echo test. Visited SBI and was told that there is no change in the interest rates for the fixed deposits. The stress thallium test is done and its report will be available on 30th.
On 29th attended hearing of a case in the CAT. It was part-heard and is now fixed for further hearing on 3rd August. Sh.Bharadwaj, advocate, who presented the case was quite thorough and convincing. Took appointment with Dr.Seth of Escorts hospital for showing all my reports.

16th to 21st July

On 16th Sh.Ranjan came and requested for taking care of the assets case registered against him by the CBI. At present he is posted at Leh in Ladakh.I have requested Sh.Pradhan to assist me in the case.On 17th Pilku rang up and asked not to pursue the buying of flat in Common Wealth Games Village at present. Was quite harsh to Swain for not doing his duties sincerely. I was not aware that his wife was suffering from cancer of intestines. I felt sorry and later apologized to him. Pilku told to write 10 stories on my experiences in the jungles of Assam and Meghalaya and generally in the North-East where I spent over 25 years, the best years of my life. These stories will be a hit with the children and could be published. He further said that when he narrated the stories of a herd of elephants and jumping across the road of a leopard, which he had seen when he was traveling with me in Assam, Abhishree & Amolikaa were thrilled and put a number of questions to him. I will work on this idea. In fact I have many stories of encounters in my mind with wild life during my tenure of Assam & Meghalaya as a Police Officer. I will try to narrate as many of them as possible for the children. On 20th visited Dr.Anoop Misra, Director & Head of the department of Diabetics and Metabolic deceases, Fortis Hospitals for showing Venita whose sugar level is not coming under control. It remains more or less touching 300. Dr. Misra examined her thoroughly and wished to see her with some reports after about a week. Due to antibiotic medicines taken by me for infection in my tooth no.6, I was feeling sleepy through out the day. Had to go to a dentist in Vikaspuri due to unbearable pain in my infected tooth. The dentist,Dr.Bansal, detected some puss in my tooth no.6. It was the main cause of pain. I was almost on the verge of collapsing. He also prescribed antibiotics and painkillers . Earlier 2 other dentists had seen the tooth but did not detect the puss. The antibiotics prescribed by one of these two dentists were not endorsed by Dr. Bansal. The moral of the experience is that we should not hesitate to consult another medical practitioner if there is no relief from others. On 21st bought herbal sweeteners for Venita. Retired to sleep at 10.30pm.

15th July

Completed the morning program. Visited SBI for some work. Sent 'Family Tree' in PDF form to children. Sheomohan spoiled the tiles of the bathroom by drops of acid that fell on them at the time of cleaning of the fixtures. I was quite angry with him which I should not have been. Had ORG X-Ray of the mouth.
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

14th July

Completed morning program. Visited SBI for work. Met Sh. Bhanu, an IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya Cadre of 1985 batch. He is the Resident Commissioner. He belongs to Andhra Pradesh and is son-in-law of Sh.Ronganai Naidu, a central minister of the cabinet of Late Narsimaha Rao, PM of India & formerly 1955 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. He had taken premature retirement on the request of SH.Narsimaha Rao and joint politics. As I left Assam in 1985 I did not interact with him. I drop in Assam house once in 6 months to keep in touch with officers of my former cadre and also to know the names of top echelons of the administration. The present chief secretary and DGP were Assistant Commissioner and ASP when I was SSP Guwahati(1977-1980). The wife of my friend about whom I wrote in my blog on 13th July came to know that her husband, my friend, had met me on 12th. She inquired as to what her husband had told me about her. I said that I could not tell the same to her. She went on & said that he must have criticized and spoken ill of her. She said that what all that he told me was true. She din't want to live with him. But somehow she was continuing to live with him. I kept mum and didn't say anything. I advised her to live happily in the interest of the family.
Barun rang up for a chit-chat. When I asked him as to how he liked the mails forwarded by me. He said he could not read all. As he is getting no time to read the mails, there is no point in forwarding the same to him. We should delete his name from the mail list and send him some important mails only and not all.
Retired to sleep at 11.15 pm.

13th July

Completed morning program. In fact pranayam, asans, exercises & walk are more important than anything else. These things and particularly walk, games, swimming etc. are absolutely essential to keep body and mind in a fit condition. As far as possible we should not miss them on any day.
Pilku asked to visit Common Wealth Games Village to look up flats. We have already decided to visit as soon as we hear from the builders.
Visited Safdarjang hospital and consulted the dental surgeon who advised an ORG X-Ray of the mouth to know the condition of teeth for further procedures. Obtained the permission for X-Ray ORG at Star 'Imaging' Path lab, Tilaknagar. Will get it done as soon as the antibiotic course of four days is over.
On way collected coffee from Cafe, Vikaspuri. But the girls on duty did not take money. On inquiry came to know that as I had won the bet due to victory of Spain, they had not charged for the coffee. In fact on Sunday the 11th they said that Spain would win. I agreed with them. As both of us agreed there was no scope for bet. Then they said that they would go for victory to Netherlands so that we could have a bet. The bet was for Rs.10/- only, but they had said that if they lost they would rather give me a cup of coffee free of cost. In fact I had forgotten the bet. It is only when the driver told me that I didn't have to pay for the coffee I remembered the episode. The 2 girls working in the cafe Vikaspuri are studying in the Delhi University in 3rd year of their graduation course. They get Rs. 6000/- per month for a 12 hour schedule of work per day with one day off each week. I was reminded of my daughter-in-law Ruchi working in Mc. Donalds in UK to earn some money so that she could carry on along with my son who was then studying in the London school of Economics. It's good that the youngsters take to jobs so that they can carry on their studies and later try for better jobs. In fact when my son Pilku got a job in UK, my daughter-in-law left Mc. Donalds job and joined MSC course in Information Technology at London School of Economics & after completing it joined Nessele in the first instance & of course she joined Unilever UK later followed by some other companies. After the birth of the 2nd child she has not been able to join any work. When I think of all this I salute Zap 86 (about which I have written in my blog on 9-11 July).
An old friend of mine of school days met me. We were reminiscent of old days. He told me the story of his life as to how things we were going on between him and his wife. He said, quote,"There is a deep seated dislike for me in the mind of my wife since very inception of our married life.",unquote. I asked what the reason was. He replied, quote,"I don't know .As you know ours was an arranged marriage in which none of us had seen each other. I have taken care of her to the best of my ability. But she appears to have somehow tolerated to live with me. She made every possible effort to leave me but somehow didn't succeed. There was none in her family who could give her succor. She wants to leave me even now. I told her that she could live separately if she so desired. But she does not want to live separately to keep facade of living together so that her parents, brothers & sisters didn't feel unhappy. She wants me to leave her. How can I leave her? I am at my wit's end. I think I have lived long years with her and will perhaps continue to live some years that are left."unquote. After hearing my friend I felt quite sad and advised him to continue to take care and put up with her as he had done so far. Life is like that. It is difficult to understand it as also to keep on living it. There is no alternative but to carry on. My friend left after lunch at a restaurant in Cannaught Place. He had to catch his flight by Jet Airways at 4.30 pm for Mumbai. I saw him off at the airport and promised to look him up as soon as I could when I went to Mumbai. I also asked him to call me whenever he came to Delhi to see if we could meet again over a cup of coffee/lunch/dinner. He was quite close to me in the school days from our 5th to 8th classes in AS Higher Secondary School, Fatehpur. Now he is in a good job and drawing a salary of over Rs.50,000/- a month. All his children are well settled and he lives in a suburban area of Mumbai. We met after over 55 years.
Retired to sleep at 10.30pm.
