19th & 20th August

19th

Completed Morning program. Attended birthday celebration of Alaynah, our youngest grand child . She is three today. She received me at the inner and Khyati at the outer gate of their house.

I told if i could take her in my arms. She  said, 'No. I am 3 today'. Her mother placed four candles for her to enkindle on the day. I asked Ritsy as to why she had kept four candles for Alaynah to enkindle. She said that one was for her entry into the fourth year of her life. The candles were as big as their enkindler. As soon as she lighted the candles, all of us sang Happy Birthday to her.
Her immediate elder cousin sister , Amolikaa had sent pre-recorded flute tune  with notes of Happy Birthday from London followed by singing of the same by her along with her elder sister, Abhishree. It was played by Silku to us. Akshat, her cousin brother, is in Mumbai with his parents, Babloo/Neha,  who went there to visit Sirdi, a couple of days back.
Alaynah cut the cake and all of us shared it along with other delicious snacks. Shri Mundrey, Alaynah's maternal grandfather, gave me a couple of cups of Chinese and Ceylon ese tea. The Chinese tea was of special kind. Its leafs blew up in hot water to the size of Ne-em leafs.
Alaynah's Mausi was taken by surprise when Alaynah complained to her that she had not wished her 'Happy Birthday'. It was a fact. She had joined the party after the lighting of candles and cutting of cake. She was in the house. But as she was pre-occupied in some important official work, she joined the celebration a bit late.

All of us joined her Mausi in singing Happy Birthday to Alaynah a second time. The Birthday girl enjoyed a second singing of Happy Birthday to her. She had put on pink frock with a pink flower tucked in her hair on the right frontal side. The dress was gifted by her Mausi. Although she had suffered quite a few bouts of fever recently (hitting even upto 1o6 degree one day),   but even then she looked cute. May she be blessed with good health. I have suggested to Silku not to send her to play-well school on all 5 days of the week. She has to remain there from 8 am to 1 pm. It is too much for her age.
Retired to sleep at 11 pm.

20th

Memories : Abhishree and Amolikaa chanted the Vedic prayer, given below, with me everyday  in the evening during our London stay in May-June, 2013. I selected only three slokas for them keeping in view their age. At the end of the prayer I would place my hands on their heads and bless them. One day I forgot to place my hands on their heads. Abhishree reminded me for it and said 'Place your hands on our heads and give blessings' I was touched by her words. I placed my hands on their heads and prayed to God to give them strength to face life fearlessly and bless them with success, prosperity and happiness.
Pilku left for the airport at 10 pm. His flight would leave for London after midnight. He is traveling by British Airways.

7th August

Completed morning program. Visited dentist. In the Supreme Court and chamber from 12.30  to 5 pm.
Memories : After experience of soliciting in the Wimbledon Park in 2007 and 2011, I was quite careful during my walks in 2013. I tried to avoid eye to eye contact with passers-by. I looked down when I crossed them. In the process I noticed that quite a good number of them put on chappals. Old, young and children are jogging on the pavements and parks, of course, with shoes on almost on all days of the week, but more on week-ends. There civic sense is commendable.
Retired to sleep at 10.30 pm.

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

6th August

Went for 45 minute brisk walk. In the chamber from 1.30  to  3.45 pm. Visited RML hospital along with Venita. Venita consulted Diabetes specialist.
Memories : Sometime you desire to be  anonymous so that you can do things your way without public gaze. The public gaze disturbs you and very often causes stress. 'In colloquial use, anonymity typically refers to the state of an individual's personal identity, or personally identifiable information, being publicly unknown.' (Wikipedia)
As a matter of routine I would go to Starbucks coffee joint in Southfields, London SW, with a newspaper at the end of my daily morning walk and spend an hour sipping coffee and reading newspaper. I could continue it for about 10 days. I became a familiar face to the boys and girls (staff)  of the restaurant  They started giving extra attention, care and would like to pick up a conversation mainly on Wimbledon tennis matches. For example, one day a girl said ' Sir, pray for the victory of Liscinski (who lost in finals ), she is from my country.'  I was not quite comfortable with that . I thought that i should give a break and go there after few days. I started visiting a nearby Italian restaurant. The story of Starbucks was repeated there too. The same thing happened in the pubs of Wimbledon club, village, restaurants of Central court market. I felt that anonymity is necessary in life. It distresses and helps you to tune with yourself . It is essential for happiness. Whenever Abhishree and Amolikaa told me to leave them, i felt that they wanted to be with themselves, a pre-requisite for development of a good happiness quotient. I always left them.

News of the day : "Incence sticks come with health risk: New study
Los Angeles, Aug 5 (IANS) Incence sticks could come with a health risk — new research has shown that burning these generate indoor air pollutants, which may lead to inflammation in human lung cells.
A new study, carried out by researchers in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the US, says burning incense releases pollutants, including carbon monoxide.
The report of the findings, titled “Hazard assessment of United Arab Emirates (UAE) incense smoke” appears in the August 2013 issue of Science of the Total Environment.
The World Health Organisation estimates that more than one million people a year die from chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD), primarily a result of exposure to pollutants from stoves and open hearths.
Burning incense releases similar pollutants, including carbon monoxide, reports the study, in which the authors identified and measured the particles and gases emitted from two kinds of incense typically used in UAE homes.
The testing was done over three hours, the typical time-frame during which incense is burned, in a specially designed indoor environmental chamber with a concentration of smoke that might be present in a typical UAE living room." "VancouverDesi dt.5th August,2013 on line from Google news.

3rd August (Saturday)

Completed morning program. Spent forenoon reading magazines and newspapers. In the afternoon attended the AGM of the Association of Senior Retired Indian Police Officers (Arsipso ) . It was interesting to see, hear and participate in the deliberations of the Association wherein over 30  senior retired IPS officers took part. The discussions touched upon the issues affecting the efficiency in the working of police in the country, national security etc. I wish that the IPS Association, consisting of serving officers, may take the cue from Arsipso and hold regular meetings to similarly deliberate on various issues affecting the service and force. We are not aware of its activities at present.

1st August

Completed morning program. In the Supreme Court and chamber from 12.30 to 5 pm. Very often some episodes during our May-June 2013 stay in London flash in my mind. These will make interesting reading/stories as time passes by. I will write these in the blog as and when it is possible under caption : '.Some memories'. Let me start with one today.
'Some memories' : I prefer to take First Flush Darjeeling tea in the morning. The First Flush tea is plucked in the Spring season, the Second Flush in summers and Third Flush tea in winters. The Spring tea is light compared to Summer and Winter teas. There is a special procedure to prepare tea to get the best flavor.  First, one has to rinse the container in which tea is to be brewed with hot water. One gram of tea is required for one cup of tea. I brew two cups of tea in 300 milliliter of water everyday in the morning. Hot water has to be poured in the container after its bubbles have settled down. Brewing is done just for 2 minutes. I take it without milk.  The tea prepared in such manner is quite refreshing. One can take it with milk if so wished.
One day I prepared tea in the morning. After brewing, I sieved it in a glass. It had the color of  whisky. It was about 7.30 am. Ruchi, my daughter-in-law, saw it. She exclaimed, ' What is this ?' She thought that I was drinking whisky early morning. She had not seen me drinking for years. I said,' it is tea.'I could see a flicker of disbelief in her eyes. But soon she realized her mistake. She felt quite shy about her exclamation and went away downcast, amused and smiling at herself.
Retired to sleep at 11 pm.
