News of the day :"Amazing solar 'wink' tells doomsday prediction was fallacy?"
"LONDON: NASA engineers were amazed after clicking a latest picture of the Sun which appeared to be "winking at them". 

The image, which actually reveals sunspots caused by intense magnetic activity, was taken on December 22, just a few minutes after the Mayan doomsday prophecy proved to be wrong. 

Eruptions of magnetic activity on the solar surface appear to make the Sun 'wink' at the time many believed the world would end passed, the 'Daily Mail' reported. 

The picture, which was taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), has echoes of the famous image from the 1902 French film 'A Trip To The Moon', which is regarded as the first science fiction movie. 
"Despite reports of an ancient Maya prophecy, a mysterious planet on a collision course with Earth, or a reverse in Earth's rotation, we're still here," NASA spokesperson said. 

"The Mayan connection was a misconception from the vere beginning," said Dr John Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy. 

"The Maya calendar did not end on December 21, 2012, and there were no Maya prophecies foretelling the end of the world on that date," he said.

The mesmerising pictures show the energy thrown off by the Sun in wavelengths invisible to the human eye such as X-rays and ultraviolet light.

News of the day :"`Dolphin-therapy` helps children with mental disability"
"Beijing: A new Dolphin-assisted therapy that helps treat children with mental disabilities is gaining popularity in China, according to a media report.

The technique for children with mental disabilities has already made a splash in the West, and China is now riding the experimental tide.

Fifteen sessions with a pair of bottle-nosed dolphins at Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park have helped a five-year-old autistic kid become "aware" and "alert”.Zheng Jun, father of the boy, believes the dolphin-assisted therapy has been more effective than any other treatment.

"Now, you can`t tell he`s different from his classmates," Zheng said.
Zheng became a believer of the technique after he visited an Australian dolphin-swim programme few years ago. He says his son is elated when he splashes with the creatures in the park in Jiangsu, capital of east China`s Zhejiang province.More than 80 parents of children with severe mental disabilities have booked all of next year`s spots in the program, the daily said.

Newcomers must now wait until 2014, says Liu Quansheng, manager of the park`s owner, Zhejiang Aquarium Investment Group.

"People with mental disabilities often have short attention spans. Swimming with dolphins helps them relax and focus," Liu said."Dolphin therapy is effective because these animals hold the kids` attention better than even the most engaging human therapist," he said.

"Smiling and cheerful teens are likely to earn more money than morose adolescents when they grow up, according to a study.

The study of 15,000 adolescents and young adults discovered a one-point increase in life satisfaction - another term for happiness, on a scale of five - at the age of 22 is associated with almost 2000 dollars higher pay a year at the age of 29, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Even in siblings, the happier teen went on to earn more than their less cheerful brothers or sisters, the study carried out on American teens found. 

Dr Jan-Emmanuel De Neve from University College London and Professor Andrew Oswald from the University of Warwick, found that happy individuals'' greater wealth is due partly to them being more likely to get a degree, a job and get promoted faster than their gloomier counterparts.

Venita is booking a double bed tent with attached bath at Parmarth Niketan camp in Sector 10, under Shastri bridge, near Sankracharya Marg, Kumbh Mela for one night on 13.12.12. After bath early morning on 14th she will leave it. She can have bath after Sadhus of different AKHARAS have taken bath.They take bath at the auspicious time. Bathing for the public is generally allowed after 4/5 am.

News of the Day : "Researchers uncover genetic cause of eczema" 

"Researchers have uncovered a genetic cause of a type of eczema most common in infancy that also affects millions of adults around the world with dry, itchy and inflamed skin lesions. 

The findings may open the way to new therapies for this frustrating syndrome, known as atopic dermatitis, which is difficult to treat and has no known cure. Eczema is also related to, and can sometimes cause, asthma, a potentially deadly immune dysfunction. 

Pharmaceutical scientists at Oregon State University (OSU) found that eczema can be triggered by inadequate Ctip2, a protein and master regulator that affects other genetic functions. They have identified two ways in which Ctip2 can lead to eczema, the journal Public Library of Science ONE reports. 

The researchers found that Ctip2 controls lipid biosynthesis in the skin, the fats that are needed to help keep skin healthy and hydrated. In the new study, they discovered that Ctip2 suppresses TSLP, a cytokine protein produced by skin cells that can trigger inflammation, according to an Oregon statement. 

Levels of this inflammatory TSLP, which is ordinarily undetectable in human skin, were found to be 1,000 times higher in lab animals that had been genetically modified to have no Ctip2 production in their skin. 

In these studies, we've basically shown that inadequate Ctip2 is reducing the lipids in skin that it needs to stay healthy, protect itself and perform its function," said Arup Indra, associate professor of pharmacy at the OSU College of Pharmacy. 

"At the same time this can allow unwanted formation of proteins that trigger inflammation. The skin's ability to resist inflammation is going down just as the amount of inflammation is going up, and the underlying reason is that Ctip2 is not doing its job. Either or both of these problems can lead to eczema," Indra added.

Atopic dermatitis is linked with a dysfunctional immune response, but researchers have never understood the underlying cause.

It seems hard to believe that the Christian community is in trouble. Bells still peal, echoing through the winding streets and on Sundays two services are held simultaneously in the sprawling Church of the Nativity - a Catholic one, which plays hymns on a loudspeaker outside the service, and a Greek Orthodox one next door, where the congregation listens to deep-throated singing as they are bathed in clouds of incense.

Christmas will be celebrated four times in Bethlehem in the next few weeks as the Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Syrian and Coptic churches mark it on different dates.

Last week, as a few tour parties were venturing back after the brief Gaza war caused mass cancellations, there was a huge Christmas tree in Manger Square. The squat and massive church - one of the holiest in Christendom, dating back to 339 AD - had a giant neon star shining on its roof.

''I don't think Christians will stay here because there is no work for us,'' said George, a helper at the Milk Grotto five minutes' walk south of Manger Square, where the devout believe the holy family hid before their flight from the slaughter of the innocents." Shri Bhalla . a friend of Kaushals was hospitalised yesterday after  heart attack. He will undergo bypass surgery on 2nd Jan.2013. India lost T-20 cricket match to England.  Both have won each. T-20 series are leveled.

Went for a half an hour walk. Pilku left for London. He is 44 today. It is his 45th birthday. Venita  did Puja in the temple and distributed sweets. She accompanied Pilku to the airport to see him off.

News of the Day :Popular antibiotic Amoxicillin, prescribed for bacterial infections of the chest, urine or ear and dental abscesses, could be harmful, suggest medical researchers, while warning that the drug could lead to side-effects such as diarrhoea, rash, vomiting and the development of resistance.

Amoxicillin is commonly used to treat coughs accompanied by lower respiratory tract symptoms (LTRI), and since viruses are believed to cause most of these infections, even whether or not antibiotics — used against bacteria — are at all effective in treating these conditions is hotly debated.

In the study, 2,061 adults with acute uncomplicated LRTI from primary care practices in 12 European countries — including England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, Spain and Poland — were randomly assigned to receive either amoxicillin or a placebo three times a day for seven days. Doctors assessed symptoms at the start of the study and the participants completed a daily symptom diary, the journal Lancet reports.

Results showed there was little difference in severity or duration of symptoms reported between the two groups, even among older patients aged over 60 where antibiotics appeared to have a very limited effect, according to the Daily Mail

More patients in the placebo group experienced new or worsening symptoms, 30 people needed to be treated to prevent one case of worsening symptoms, and just

“Think of life like an onion emerging in layers, where each layer functions as a feedback mechanism that stabilises and improves the ability to fix carbon,” said Braakman.

Braakman and Smith describe specific features of metabolism and sub-divide helper metabolites by their functions. For example, vitamin B9, a complex molecule in the ’cofactor’ class, facilitates the incorporation of one-carbon compounds into metabolism.

In mapping the chemical pathways to life’s emergence, the researchers touch on a more existential question: How likely was it for life.

News of the Day :"Darkness falls early these days and the long days of summer have shortened. In warm climates like we experience in India, cool winter days are welcome. December 21 is known as the Winter Solstice where solstice means “sun standing still”. December 21 is the shortest day of the year and the longest night. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is directly overhead at noon only along the Tropic of Capricorn.
In a sense, this day is the reawakening of the seasons and the cycle begins again. In ancient times, this day was also known as Yule because on that day a huge log — the Yule log — was added to a bonfire and everyone would dance and sing around it in the hope of reawakening the sun from its long winter slumber. The Romans on the other hand celebrated this day to honour Saturnus, the god of harvest and Mithras, the god of light. 
Because of the axial tilt of the earth and the daily rotation, the earth’s axis is always pointed in the same place in the sky. So, as the earth follows its orbit around the sun, the hemisphere that faces the sun experiences summer for six months, as the other half which faces away from the sun experiences winter. The North Pole is tilted 23.5° away from the sun. So, all places above a latitude of 66.5° north (Arctic Polar Circle) will be in darkness, and locations below a latitude of 66.5° south (Antatctic Polar Circle) will receive 24 hours of daylight.

Seasonally, December 21 is significant because from this day on, there is a gradual lengthening of daylight hours. If you are fortunate enough to travel from the Antarctic Circle towards the South Pole you will get to see the midnight sun at this time. On the other hand if you are travelling from the Arctic Circle towards the North Pole you will not be able to see the sun!

Spent the day and evening playing with Akshat and Alaynah. Alaynah is annoyed unless you give her full attention. Watched Khyati playing tennis. More focus is needed by her to go high up in the game.

I talked to an official of Ramkrishna Mission at Delhi. He suggested that i should meet Ramkrishna Mission Head at Kanpur. I will meet him on 23rd when i will be there.Talked to Bezbaruah. He suggests that we may search for jobs.in WB and UNO in their Websites.Wrote to Neha.I will also search.

Apparently, FINPRO is going through a recession. Babloo has to leave it. His last day of working is Feb-end. There were indications of it during last few months..I foresee some better job for him in future. We should not worry about this development and try for another job.. He has an illustrious CV. 
12.12.12 will now come in the next century,  A similar figure will now come only after 88 years in the year 2101-- 01.01.01.

Went for 45 minute brisk walk. It drizzled a bit. I carried an umbrella. It was useful. Visited Safdarjung Hospital and Meghalaya House. In chamber from 1.30 to 5.15 pm 

The main issues in the news these days are Gujarat Elections which are to take place on 13th and 17th December. Hectic canvassing is going on. Mutually recriminatory speeches are being given by leaders of different political parties. The expenditure of about Rs.120 crores by Walmart to get multi-retail opening in India is the subject of much debate and attack on Congress by the opposition parties. There is a demand for inquiry by  an independent agency to find out the individuals who were paid in the process. The BSP chief Mayavati has reportedly threatened UPA with adverse consequences unless it ensures passage of Constitution Amendment Bill permitting quota in promotions. It is being opposed by SP tooth and nail.

FDI and Cricket are the main issues in the news these days apart from other local matters . I am in favour of FDI for two reasons. Firstly,we will be able to buy the best. Secondly, it will generate desire in the Indian industry to compete. Poor performance by the Indian cricket team in the current series between India and England is another issue. I think that Indian team should be refurbished.

Completed morning program. Could not accompany Venita to Noida to attend Anjali's son's birthday celebration and lunch. Neha accompanied Venita. She was quite happy with the arrangements for birthday celebration and lunch. Anjali and Ankur have named their son, Anav. On way back, they visited Gita, Pradip and Yash. Venita said that Yash might be able to go to school after sometime. There was improvement in his condition. Could not attend Jauhari's daughter's marriage tonight at Meerut. Venita met Jauharis yesterday and gave a gift.

News of the day : "Is the extra light produced on Diwali strong enough to be captured from outer space? Probably not, says NASA, the U.S. space agency. But the image they released of India at night is pretty spectacular nonetheless.

Venita recited Ramayana from 2 to 4 am in the temple. Akhand path ended and Arti took place at 7 am. She returned home at 8 am.

1rst Dec.

Completed morning program. Visited Physiotherapy center in a nearby temple for wax bath mainly of left knee. As i could not do exercises for about 10 days during stay at Fatehpur and thereafter at Delhi, slight stiffness developed in the left knee. There is no pain. But i cannot bend it 180 degree and do Bajrasan. Some Asans can be done in Bajrasan only.. I have to skip them for the present. It had happened in May 2010. After 15 days of wax bath of the knee, it became supple and i could do Bajrasan.

Babloo was born today 41 years back. It is his 42nd birthday. Venita started Akhand Ramayan today in the temple. It will be completed tomorrow early morning  She recited it from 11 am to 2 pm. She did Puja and distributed dates to the servants. She gave me some too. Good sense has dawned on her. She says she should not get sweets home.

Attended dinner as part of Babloo's birthday celebrations at Gurgaon. Neha lit 41 little candles on an egg-less cake. Babloo cut the cake to the singing of 'Happy Birthday to you'. Apart from us Silku attended the celebration. Ritanbara, Khyati and Alaynah could not join. Khyati has her six monthly terminal written examination tomorrow. Her mother was away to Banglore for few days. She did not focus herself well in studies during these days. Venita and I met them. Venita gave all of them a gift each. We should have given a gift each to Neha and Ritanbara also when we give to all other children. To us they are also like children. We will keep this in mind for future. It was a small/cute celebration of the day.

Amolikaa won gold medal in gymnastics in her age group today.

Completed morning program. In chamber from 1 to 3 pm. Today is Guru Poornima and a holiday. Pal sent a brilliant picture of Nanak Devji through a multimedia message. Wished Sunita on her 63rd birthday. My father-in law, late SC Verma , wrote a scholarly book on "Guru Nanak and the Logos of Divine Manifestation ". He could not complete translation of Adi Granth in English. I will try to get hold of the incomplete book and complete it.  He died early in his late fifties.

Went for a 40 minute walk. Spent about 45 minutes in the sun in the poolside. The sun was pleasant. The temperature outside the hotel was 23 degree celsius. Had meeting with the client from 9.15 to 10.15 am. Left Hyderabad at 4.15 pm . Arrived Delhi at 6.15 pm.
Retired to sleep at 10 pm.

Left home very early to board a flight to Hyderabad. Along with Advocate Atiar Singh attended a conference.

Completed morning program. Visited PNB. Spent the day reading newspapers and magazines.We kept fast. It is Prabodhini Ekadashi today. Venita joined in a procession from the temple inside the Society premises on the occasion of Tulsi Vivah for about  10 minutes.

Went for 45 minute brisk walk. Visited SBI. In chamber from 12.30 to 4 pm. Went to Sh. Kewalramani, a 1949 batch IPS officer (he was in Assam in 1960s ), to wish him on his 86th birthday. He had left his house sometime back. His driver and guard could not tell when he would come back. Left message for him with them. Earlier a bouquet of flowers had been delivered to him in the morning on our instruction to a florist.

Completed morning program after a long break. Spent the day reading newspapers and magazines.
Pilku got a pup and named it Cookie. Its breed is not indicated in the mail. Children pressurized him for it. Both Pilku and Ruchi are dog lovers. As a mother loves her child, irrespective of his/her looks and behaviour, a dog loves its master. When all will be sleeping at dead of the night, our Apso pup (we called it Puppy) came from some dark corner of the house to receive me whenever i returned late night after duty. While playing, sometimes children teased it. Puppy would come and hide in between my legs. It was a little toy like hairy living being very much like Cookie. Puppy had golden hair. Cookie has white hair (so it appears from its photograph, mailed to us today ). We wish grandchildren its great company and good time.

16th and 17th Nov.

On 16th 
Mason came. Process of repairs/construction will start from tomorrow. Checked the accounts of expenditure in connection with the same with Shivmohan and Ajju. Did havan, following Vedic and Sanatan Dharm methodology, a mixture of the two. A renowned Pandit desired us to donate some clothes to the three residents of an old age home. He had visited us on the Diwali day. We went to Khadi Ashram and bought 3 woolen jackets.When we reached the old age home, about 14 kms from our place, we came to know that the home had been closed for a long time. We gave the same to the 3 needy and dedicated persons in service of a temple on way back at Tambeshwar. At the temple the manager, a former railway officer, now a sadhu in saffron clothes, told that once upon a time Aurangzeb was passing by the temple and said "Ai salame valekum " There was no reply. Then he said, " If you do not answer me, i will break you and the temple " It is said that a tender voice replied, " Valekum salam ".And Aurangjeb is said to have quitely left the place.
Left Fatehpur Railway Staation at 11:15 p.m. After lot of efforts, got the reservation in A.C-II tier sleeper .Retired to sleep in the train at 11:45 p.m

On   17th
Arrived New Delhi station at 7:15 a.m. Settled down at home. We were away from home for over 9 days. Sheomohan informed that construction work started at Fatehpur. In chamber from 3;30 to 6.30 pm. As Advocate Atiar was preoccupied otherwise, postponed the meeting with Dago . Sapra also could not come due to preoccupation . We will meet him on Monday the 19th instant.
