21st to 23rd June

Last week I did not have any rest. It was continuous running about including on Saturday & Sunday. Upto 23rd also I could not get any rest. My back is much strained. I could take some rest on 23rd after return from Center for Sight, where Venita was given Avastin injection in her right eye. It was Ekadashi fast also for me on 23rd. After I had 4 hours sleep in the evening, I felt fresh and had dinner. Retired to sleep early at 10.30 pm.

18th to 20th June

Collected Avastin injection from AD (MSD) CGHS on 18th. Neha's parents stayed for sometime at Gurgaon. Babua loves them. When they wanted to go he said "Don't go to Jaipur as your house will be unclean. Go tomorrow. Tell the driver not to come today." He was feeling bad as they were leaving him. He had good time with them at Rishikesh also. On 19th visited Akshardham and witnessed pooja and jap by mukhya Swamiji Maharaj. Mukhya Swamiji is a quiet person and emits an aura of piety and simplicity. I was one of the special invitees who were given the opportunity to meet him in person. He garlanded me and gave a packet of sweets. The garland emitted a sweet smell. I decided to keep it for Babua whom I was to meet on 20th after lunch at Subhash's place. On 20th had lunch in Subhash's place and met Chhutulu, who had hernia operation a few days back. Barun and his family also joined in.

I had inherited about 10 acres of land from my ancestors. Quantum of ownership of agricultural land after abolition of Zamindari was reduced to the extent of agricultural land, tilled as 'Khudkast'. I kept it for about 19 years after the death of my father, Late Ram Bihari Lal. I found it difficult to manage it from Delhi where now I live and therefore sold it with the concurrence of my 3 sons & wife.As the agricultural land sold by me was situated at a distance of over 18 kilometers from the nearest Town Committee/Municipality area, no capital gains was payable. This fact is mentioned in my income tax return of the relevant period. All payments were received through inter-bank transfer. The sale proceeds are equally divided among 3 sons.A sum of Rs.1,30,000 is also given to each of my 4 grand children. The interests from the fixed deposits of these amounts are being utilized in maintenance & renovation of the ancestral house at Fatehpur ,UP & salary etc. of the caretaker. All my children and wife desire that we should maintain the ancestral house in memory of my late father. After the house is renovated we will consider various options of utilization such as for a school/hostel for disabled children, or hospital or school etc. in consultation with children and wife.

11th to 17th June

Read the review of Fali S.Nariman's 'Before Memory Fades' in the Indian Express on 12th. It is in the nature of an autobiography. He writes about emergency, judgment of justice Jugmohan Lal Sinha of Allahabad High Court, which according to him is not very convincing, acquiescence of the then President of India, late Fakhruddin Ahmed,a former Advocate General of Assam, a pliant President was prevailed upon by 3 lawyers: Sarvashree H.R. Gokhle, S.S. Ray & Rajni Patel, many areas of silence in our constitution, Ramnath Goenka, the courage of 2 o'clock in the morning kind: unprepared: personal appearance not dispensed with, shuttling from one place to another dutifully putting up appearance, judicial overreach, level of the Joint Secretary, single directive, his effort to modify the provision of single directive and failure etc. I would like to buy a copy and read in details. The following lines from the write-ups of the editorial page of the Indian Express dated 13-06-10 attracted my attention.
1. Meghanand Desai. 'After 1917, Lenin did not repay those socialists with any kindness. That was his way. Now his way is gone'. I think the society is now full of Lenins. These Lenins do not remember what their friends, relations and colleagues did for them. They are thankless lot like Lenin.
2. Talvin Singh. She has written about 'democratic feudalism'. She is 100 percent correct.
3. Sudheendra Kulkarni. 'The greatest danger was separating oneself from reality'. True to the hilt.
4. Shombit Sen Gupta. 'Football can turn around fortunes'. A multi billion phenomenon much more in volume than cricket.
Venita had FNAC at a diagnostic center in Karkadoma on 14th.
On 15th Kaushal, his wife Gouri, Neha and Babua came. Had lunch and left after about an hour. I gave Kaushal a book written by Obama. I dint like his style. These days I am reading 'The Last Lecture', a book given to me by Ruchi, my eldest daughter-in-law. Got a mail from Ruchi on 17th. The grand children are expected in Delhi after 15th July and she requested me to organize swimming and riding lessons for them.I am trying. The FNAC report is negative and suspicious formation in the breast of Venita is not malignant.

10th June

Visited RML for clarifications about medicines, being taken by Venita. Dr. AK Agarwal said that there should be no side effect of the medicines taken by her. Instead we should record her blood sugar level whenever she complained of corrosion on her hands and arms and later go to him after recording the same for a few days. He was slightly annoyed when I asked him the purpose of prescribing each of the 6 medicines which I could not understand. Although he explained the same but said that I could get this kind of information from the CGHS. Dr.HP Singh had fixed the appointment with Dr.AK Agarwal. It appears Dr.Agarwal did not like it and told to get the appointment through his PA whenever I desired to see him. He is slightly eccentric but a good physician.Obtained the permission for the FNAC from CGHS. Avinash Chandra,a DIG of Police of Punjab Govt. met me and desired to guide him in preparing his statement to the CBI who have registered a case against him under Prevention of Corruption Act. I went through his papers and said that I would tell a junior to prepare a list of dates and draft statement for his convenience to make his statement to the CBI under section 161 CRPC. I impressed upon him to be truthful and not to tell a lie. That is the only thing which will help him in redeeming from the case.
Retired to sleep at 11.30 pm.

1st to 9th June

Quite a few calls came inquiring about the health of Venita. On 2nd left for Allahabad to participate in the 13th day ceremonies of my mother-in-law along with Venita by Prayagraj. The train was late by about an hour when it reached Allahabad on 3rd. The detailed ceremonies took place on 3rd.On reaching her house I stood for a couple of minutes before her photograph and offered some flowers. Met all her 3 sons and gave each of them a warm hug. I could not stop a sigh from my throat when I hugged them. All her three daughters were there and two of her sons-in-law (Me & Pramod). Four of her grand children were present, three from the daughters side and one from her sons side. Devika, grand daughter, flew from Mumbai to join in the ceremony. She has another two grand daughters.Misty could not come as she is studying in UK. Chottu also could not come due to unavoidable reasons. Daughters and grand daughters love more. Two of her grand daughters-in-law had also come.Detailed Puja was done and gifts given to 13 Brahmans including the wife of the head Pundit. Their feet were washed by the sons and they were fed too.All the Gods were invoked to give peace to the departed soul. As per the tradition of the Hindu families in India, the mantle of management of the family affairs has now fallen on the head of Arun who is the eldest son. Everyone in the family, sisters, brothers, did Tilak heralding he [Arun]is now the head of the family and will guide all.Venita gave a token amount of Rs. 1001/- on the occasion to him. To the sons-in-law of the family he is a virtual father-in-law and mother-in-law,the two in one.I have written in my will that no such ceremonies be done after my death and that I should be cremated in electric crematorium. During the day after the ceremonies and lunch I felt quite uncomfortable due to heat and a weak air conditioner and a fan which moved very fast but did not give air.I am now allergic to extreme heat and extreme cold. I don't know why. May be it is the side effect of Angioplasty which I underwent in 2004.In the evening there was a Bhajan Sandya followed by dinner(considered as prasad from the deceased). But the same were disturbed due to dust storm. Had dinner and left for the railway station at 8.45 pm. The train started on time. Arrived New Delhi on 4th at 8 am. Took Venita to Center for Sight in the afternoon. Again there is deterioration in her right eye. Dr. Dinesh Talwar prescribed Avastin injection, which is quite painful and costs over Rs.15,000. I think that deterioration took place due to her high sugar level, stress and pneumonia. On 5th noted the following lines from the write up of Dilip Bob published in India Today dated 7th June 2010( we receive post dated magazines) at page 22 under caption "India's Trust Deficit"..."....we prefer safe & conventional over risk-taking and out of the box thinkers or doers....Ratan Tata, Murthy,Premji run perhaps most respected companies but are hardly adventurous types. In contrast in USA Apple's Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, Sarah Palin - innovator, risk taker, legendary minister & maverick politicians are in the top five."...."We like our role models to be plain vanilla rather than risk laden chocolates, family man who dress conventionally and rarely appear in public as opposed to those who reflect ostentatious living. To me the bottom line is that most Indians are still stuck in Hindu rate of growth mind set, where baby steps are preferable to audacious leaps of ambition and endeavor.Trust me on that".I agree with Bob.
On 6th RN Bharadwaj met. His blood pressure was 150/130. I don't know how could he stand at that pressure. I am sure he was telling a lie. Read India Today tiger issue. FIFA world cup starts on 11th. KTS and Vikas are going to South Africa. It is the world's biggest sports event once in 4 years. Had Chinese food from Yo China. On 8th visited AIIMS and showed Venita to Dr. Sandeep Guleria. He suggested biopsy by ultrasound guided FNAC . We got the appointment in AIIMS with the help of Rashmi. Wished Riya a Happy birthday. She is at her Nana's place. A thought came into mind that instincts govern us most. Let the reason govern us now for next 10 years atleast and after that too to the 'last syllable of recorded time'. DDA men came and recorded the violations in our block. Some irregular additions to our flats were seen by them. In fact I have already stated in the last meeting of the executive committee of the society that if any violation is done by me I may be informed so that I can remove it. On 9th Chistya came and we discussed his cases, handled by us.
