Visited Vikaspuri to receive passport by post. Celebrated Pilku's birthday along with Silku. He cut the cake to the singing of 'Happy Birthday' by all of us. Babloo could not join due to official preoccupation. Ruchi's cousin sister wished him with pretty purple/white orchids along with a cake. She works at Chennai in Standard Chartered Bank.
Pilku is 48 today. He was born on 20.12.1968 at 05.58 hours. According to the Indian calendar, it was Thursday, Shuklapaksh, Pratipada of Paush, Samvat 2025 at Kanpur, UP. Venita arranged to distribute sweets at Vikaspuri temple. We blessed him for a happy life. We will transfer some money to a charity at Fatehpur for the occasion as we did last year.

Pilku arrived today morning. Nearly 4 hours spent in Passport Seva Kendra at RK Puram for reissuance of our passports. It was quite a cold day. It is 15 degree centigrade and foggy at present (8.45 pm).

Attended talk by Ambassador Mira Shankar on American election-Outcome-Implication for India at CSOI. She discussed all aspects of recent American Presidential election and its implication not only for India as also for others. As for India nothing much is likely to change. With regard to China it would be like a fight between two Sumo wrestlers who would not bring down the other due to their financial involvements with each other . Racial divide, minorities and gender were the prime factors in the outcome of election.

Venita intermittently went to the temple to recite Ramayana. There were others too. Two/ three at a time.  But at least one must recite all the time till  full recitation is over. She  cooked big quantity of halva to be distributed next day early morning  as Prasad. She also cooked food for those who would recite throughout the  night. It takes about 24 hours to complete the process. She would spend quite a few hours in the temple tonight.

We visited PNB and SBI and took out money required by us. Venita also deposited some money. It was painful to watch a number of persons in queues for long duration at all bank outlets.. As we were senior citizens we got precedence  and entered the banks without wait.

On Kartik Purnima yesterday, Venita finished all her Pujas of the month. Drove to VV today in the forenoon.
As there was space for senior  citizens to get precedence, I could get entry in SBI Basant Lok without hassles. I took Rs 4500 in 100 rupee currency in lieu of old Re 500 notes. Venita may accompany me next day for depositing cash in her hand as desired by her as also for taking Rs 4500/- new currency notes in lieu of old. I will also take Rs 4500. Every person is entitled to Rs 4500 of new currency in lieu of old each day. I have to pay the wages of maid and another help for the month of Oct. I need money for the same.

Visited Gurumaa Ashram at Ganaur, Dist Sonepat , Haryana, 65 kms. from Delhi to attend Prakas Utsav on the occasion of Guru Nanak's birth anniversary. Venita accompanied. Spent three hours in the Ashram, A new Sabhaghar named Sapta Rishi, with a seating capacity for an audience of about 1000 was inaugurated. Delicious lunch was served after their discourses. Sapta Rishis including Gurumaa and Ramdeva spoke on religious matters.

Venita went to Punjab National Bank to exchange demonetised notes worth Rs.4000/- with new ones. She could not. She was quite angry with the arrangements at the bank. Thapa informed  that some people were gate crashing and not allowing the others in the line for along  time to get in. The two home guards on duty were ineffective/unable to control the gate crashers. The DCP, on request, sent some policemen who restored order and Thapa got money. He was unhappy with getting two notes of Rs 2000/- each. I told him that these could be cashed in the market.

The banks are not functional. The Rs 500 and 1000 notes are no longer legal tenders from 8th midnight . New series  in their place are likely to circulate by 10th. People can get new for old notes. PM Modi said it was done to cut down black money and corruption .
Akshat/Neha came on way to airport to receive Babloo who had gone to Mmbai for professional work. He did not have new currency to pay for  taxi. The old currency became illegal on 8th night when he was on tour. Before they went to airport, we had dinner together, partly cooked by Neha.

Left Fatehpur at about 9.30 am by road. Arrived Kanpur. Met elder sister and niece. Saw niece's school, a vibrant, well managed institution with about 200 students from nursery to class 8th  . After lunch left for the railway station and boarded the Swarn Shatabdi express to Delhi. Arrived at about 10.30 pm.
We enjoyed Diwali celebration at Fatehpur much with visitors and families sharing sweets,  dry fruits, soup and other snacks. We also participated in bursting of fire crackers by Sheo Mohan's children. Sky was free of smog and dust. In course of Asans, lying on the roof watched the spectacle of blue sky with birds doing aerobatics. It was reminiscent of my childhood days.

Advocates Digvijay Singh, Ajay, Shivaji and Dr. Chetan came. Chhoti Diwali is celebrated today.
Shiva Mohan's children with Venita's active financial support have decorated the ancestral house with twinkling tiny Chinese lights around and inside it. Despite people's aversion to Chinese goods at the moment, tiny lights are bought because no matching alternatives are available. But buying is much restricted. It is said that next year these could be totally wiped off a large number of markets in India.

A religious congregation of Sikhs is organized in the plot of land adjacent to the Society at Vikaspuri. Guru Granth Sahib is being recited, interspersed with devotional songs of Kabir, Raidas and other saints. More or less a 24 hour 'langar' is arranged. On the insistence of Venita, visited the pavilion. It is impressive. 'Dodge' station wagon costing about four crores along with Honda city Campri and Maruti's new vehicle, Ertega are exhibited for advertisement. Hundreds of people are visiting the place.

Viky Behal came. Discussed  billing for consumption of electricity as recorded in a common metre for certain services. Informed him that ground-floor owner has also to pay a part of the bill as per Shri Arvind, Manager Admn of the builders Uppals. Bills for water are not yet received. Requested Viky to take it up with the builders/MCD from his end too and let me know.
While builders were getting electricity bills of the common meter and forwarded to us for payment (which we shared and paid ), they did not, however, send any water bills. I have brought it to the notice Shri Arvind. He supervises maintenance of  buildings constructed by Uppals. He said that he would also check and let me know. Perhaps a huge water bill is expected.

Visited VV welfare centre.  We have become members of VV welfare association (a private body). We cannot become members of VV welfare Centre (official body) as we are not the owners of the flat. We can also not become members of VV club. Only owners can. We can, however, avail of the services of plumber, carpenter , electrician, cleaner and others on payment of monthly charges which are nominal. Although rates are nominal but we will  be charged at double the rates as we are  not members. Even double rates are not quite high and reasonable. We will opt for their services from 1st December as free services from the builder will end on 26th November, date of purchase of the flat. There is bar to foreigners. They can become members of the VV welfare centre after necessary amendments are made in the statuary rules. The AGM of the VV welfare centre has recommended to allow foreigners/NRIs who have their houses in Vasant Vihar to become members. The matter is pending with Delhi govt.
Met the manager of VV welfare centre and requested him to give the reference of the matter so that I could take it up with Chief Secretary and expedite. He said that he would give after clearance from the Secretary VV Service centre.

Visited CGHS. Joined batch second friday lunch at CSOI Kasturba Gandhi Marg. Pakistan was the main subject of discussion. 13 of us from IAS, IFS,IPS and Central services were present. Spent time together for over 2 hours.There was a couple from a Central service too. Quite a few of us have so much changed that it is difficult to corelate us to what we were 52 years back when we first met at Mussoorie. But quite a few of us  still keep our basic features.

Dadwals live in the ground floor of our block. On their invitation and insistence, we attended the first birthday celebration of their grandson in a nearby hotel. I could not take food as I was on ekadasi fast. Venita took. Had to rush back as the driver had to reach his newly rented room before 10 pm. His landlady has asked him to return by 10 pm. The room is in first floor and landlady lives in 2nd floor . The entire house is locked from inside. Shivamohan is also staying in the same room these days. He had come on 16th Sept. He is to go back to Fatehpur on 17th Oct.

Today is Venita's 68th birthday.She was born on Navmi of Aswin, Suklapaksha , Samvat 2005 , at about 2.30 to 3 am according to Hindi Panchang on Monday corresponding to 11th October, 1948 at Allahabad, UP,India.. A number of family members and friends wished her happy birthday. Along with Babloo/Neha/Akshat, we had lunch at a nearby hotel where she cut the cake to singing of Happy birthday by us.

Khyati, our eldest granddaughter, was born and is 15 today. She was born on Ashtami of Aswin's Adhik Mas (Dwatiya), Krishnapaksh, Wednesday, Vikram Samvat 2058/Shak Samvat 1923 of the Hindi Panchang corresponding to 10th October, 2001 of Gregorian calender at 12.10 pm in a Vasant Vihar hospital, New Delhi.. We blessed her for happy and bright life.
Venita did Puja early morning and distributed sweets to all.
Attended her birthday celebration at Gurgaon followed by high tea. Over 10 girls, all her classmates, joined in singing happy birthday as she cut  the cake and extinguished colourful tiny lights, brought by her mother from USA. Unique thing about the lights was that these did not melt. They evaporated.

In the Supreme court from about 2 to 3 pm. Drove down from VV to Vikaspuri in the evening to join Venita in Puja rituals and celebrations. The Bengalis of the area as also those from the Society have set up a big Pandal, idol of Goddess Durga in an adjacent maidan. Venita is specially invited to join them in the Puja and feast on all the days. At the end of the Puja,the Dassehra falls on 11th; Venita's birthday also falls on the day. When she was born on 11th Oct 1948, it too was a Dassehra day. Her brothers and sisters used to tease her that she was Ravan reborn in the family.

Completed morning program. Today I inadvertently left keys inside the flat when i came out to go to court. Had to call a technician to open the door lock and cough out Rs 700/- for his expertise. He took few minutes to open it. Luckily i had not double locked it from inside. In that case,the lock would have had to be broken, according to the technician. We have two keys : one is kept by me and another by Venita. Venita's key had been brought by Shiv Mohan when he came to VV along with me on Monday last. Venita thought his presence was necessary at VV to take care of me,. I had told her it was not necessary . His services could better be utilized at Vikaspuri. As desired by her,he went back today to Vikaspuri, leaving behind Venita's key in the flat. Hence the mix-up.

Drove to VV. Attended  a Seminar on 'Marginalization & Identity – Roma in Europe, Minorities in India' at the Institute of Social Sciences Vasantkunj. The Romas have claimed linkage with  India's Banjaras.  It was an absorbing discussion, attended by Social scientists of JNU, DU and others.My interest was aroused due to a news item sometime back on the subject. Among the immigrants to UK from other parts of Europe, Romas were mentioned in course of discussion with an Englishman during my last visit to London. He was quite critical of their demeanor.

Attended a discourse by Gurumaa at Sirifort auditorium on 'Relevance of Srimad Bhagavad Gita in 21st century' from 11 am to 1 pm.. Today is Akshat's birthday. He is 10. According to Indian calendar, he was born on Friday, Navmi, at 9.57 am of Aswin's Krishnapaksh, Vikram Samvat 2063 in Moolchand hospital, New Delhi, India. It was also Shradha paksh during the period. It corresponded to Gregorian calender's 15th September 2006. It is a Hindu belief that ancestors take births during the Shradha paksh in families. We prayed for his long healthy life. Venita rang up at 7.30 am to wish and bless him but he had already left for the School at 7.
Attended his birthday bash at Gurgram along with Venita. Akshat cut cake to the the singing of Happy birthday to him by all of us including about 10 children, especially selected by him for the occasion. Silku also came.

Attended the meeting of the State Security Commission. The Chief Minister presided. Others in cluded the State Home Minister,Chief Secretary, Home Commissioner, State DGP Jain,Thankiew, an Advocate and some other officials.Attended dinner hosted by Bijon day, a former DGP,Meghalaya.

Left for Shillong to attend the meeting of the State Security Commission. While in the aircraft wished to see the Himalaya's snow-capped peaks. Could not due to heavy clouds. At Nongpoh had a chance meeting with the DC, a Maharashtrian gentleman, an IAS officer, in the Circuit house. Could not join  his invitation for lunch as i had to hurry up to Shillong. Had dinner with Peter. He is now a Member of the State Human Rights Commission. The post has the status of a High Court judge. He could be in the post till the age of 70. The Chairman of the Commission is a retired Chief Justice of a High Court. Bijon Dey, a retired DGP of Meghalaya also came for the dinner.

Visited Gurgaon to bless Silku on his birthday. He was born today.  According to the Indian calendar, he was born on 12th day of Bhadrapad, Krishnapaksh, on Thursday at 08.07 pm, Jorhat, Assam, Samvat 2027 corresponding to Gregorian calender's 27.08.1970. He is 46 today.
Today is also wedding anniversary of Pilku and Ruchi. Pilku is here these days. Wished him and talked to Ruchi also to bless her. Along with Venita had lunch with Pilku, Si;ku and Babloo at the Palm, Gurgaon. Met Ritanbara, Neha, Khyati, Akshat and Allayanah also.

Janmashtami is being celebrated today. It will end at midnight when birth of Krishna takes place. We visited local Sanatan Dharma temple and did Puja there at about midday.  Talked to Alaynah, granddaughter, early morning.
