Priyanka Gandhi is appointed Congress General Secretary for UP to assist her brother, Rahul Gandhi in 2019 General elections.
Venita went to Vikaspuri in the evening for misc.work.

Siku came after dropping Alaynah, our granddaughter, at her Mausi's place .She is to go to witness 26th Jan parade next day along with her.

70th Republic day celebrated today. Three persons including Shri Mukherjee, former President of India are awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

Silku dropped in along with Alaynah after picking her up from her Mausi's place. Alaynah was with me for about 45 minutes.

Attended Meghalaya day celebrations. The Meghalaya State came into existence on 21st Jan 1972,46 years back. Met a few cadre officers. Venita could not join in as she had a long day at Dillihat (over seven hours) celebrating Sangita/Tarun's wedding anniversary yesterday. She was tired.
Sunanda went back to Mumbai in the forenoon.

Attended Abhay's engagement ceremony at Rohni in West Delhi. About 40/45 people attended at DD Club. Some photos,taken on the occasion of the engagement ceremony of Abhay and Manisha today :
We talked to her, wished her happy birthday She has entered her teens. Her parents will guide her not to be carried away by emotions and deal with situations in life intelligently.
Venita did puja and distributed sweets to all.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated today. The sun has entered Cape of Capricorn and is Uttarayan from today. It heralds the beginning of the end of winter and arrival of summer.
I fondly remember to have taken my widow mother-in-law to Sangam for a dip on the day in 1976. The boat had only two of us and the boatman. We had dip in the extremely cold waters of the confluence of Ganga,Yamuna and mystical Saraswati. On return back home, she blessed me profusely for taking her to Sangam on the auspicious day.
I had been deputed by the Government of Assam in 1976 with a team to assist the Kumbh Mela administration in its management. We provided round the clock duty in the control room for the benefit of people coming from Assam needing help in their own language.
I had first dip in 1954 when I had accompanied parents to Allahabad. There was big stampede in which quite a few people had died The stampede occurred when Jawahar Lal Nehru came to Sangam. I remember to have seen him at that time from a distance of about 100 metres. His wistful face with smile is still fresh in my mind. No wonder he enchanted Edwina.We also got pushed around in the melee. My mother ,I remember, had become quite panicky and almost fainted. Father and others of the group (who had come with us from Fatehpur) were not so much perturbed. I was tangled among them. This was for about 10 minutes. Situation eased after crowd ran helter skelter when Nehru, others accompanying him and the caravan of their vehicles crossed the area. I was about 14 year old at that time.

Attended an interactive session on India- China relations at CSOI post Wuhan visit of the Indian PM . During the session His Excellency Luo Zhaohui, Chinese Ambassador talked about the Chinese perspectives and former Indian Ambassador to China Ashok Kantha of the Indian perspectives on the subject. The Chinese ambassador spoke about Chinese linkages with India due to Buddhism, Bollywood,Darjeeling tea and people to people contacts since ancient times etc.,Indian ambassador dwelt on Doclam ,Trade deficit, border, support to Pakistan's Hafiz Saeed, tension in Indo-Pacific region etc.. While Chinese ambassador was diplomatic in reacting to Indian assertions, Indian ambassador was forthright in his comments. It was an interesting session for about one and half an hour.
Also attended Lohri celebration.
13th (Sunday)
Venita attended A block Lohri celebration in the park in front of our building at VV. There was Lohri celebration in A block club also on Paschim Marg. We did not go there as the driver had taken half day off for personal work.

Attended a lecture by Shri Shashi Tharoor on his book 'Area of Darkness' in the Institute of Social Sciences, at Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. He dwelt in detail about exploitation of India's resources and the people during the British regime. The British left India in bankrupt condition. When they came, India's GDP was around 25%,highest in the world at that time, and left it at minus 0%. I could not retrieve comments of our English friend, Richard on the book of Shri Tharoor. But I remember he had more or less agreed with the observations of Shri Tharoor. Shri Tharoor said that UK should apologise to India for the same.

Received information about the death of an old English friend today from Anna, his daughter. Felt sad and wrote her this mail :
"I am shocked to know about the demise of our dear friend, Richard. Our condolences to Janet on her bereavement and to other members of the family and you in particular. Richard had introduced us to you. We had delicious lunch together in your apartment.

We know Janet/Richard now for about 40 years. During our May/June visit each year (Wimbledon season) to London, either we would go to them or they would come to us Those were pleasant meetings. I documented them in my blogs.

Attended Puja and lunch arranged by the family of late Lalit Sinha on his first death anniversary at their VV residence,attended by friends and relations. Venita could not accompany as her cold is yet to fully cure. Subhash also could not come for the same reason. Anita/Pramod and Sunita also came.

New year is celebrated. Good wishes exchanged. Near and dear visited. Venita was taken ill. She had minor temperature and consequent body pain. She was given antibiotic by the physician.
2nd
In the Supreme court in the afternoon ; first visit on the opening day of the Supreme court after winter break.
Venita is fine today.
Munna came in the evening and stayed overnight.
3rd
Munna went for a meeting to the CGO Complex in the morning. After the meeting he will fly back to Indore where he is posted at present.
