Started packing for our journey to Sri Lanka on 25th Dec. Google search informed that that you get Sri Lankan Rs.2.06 for one Indian rupee. Weather is tropical. Unless one travels to upcountry areas, cottons are enough to wear.

Completed morning program. In the High court from about 2 to 3 pm. Met Vikas in the High court. We had coffee together in Bar cafeteria. We got Sri Lanka Visa.Venita started packing. We are to leave for Colombo day after for over a week to spend winter holidays in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka tourism website groups  travel itineraries into 8 :1. Scenic 2. Pristine 3. Anuradhapur 4.Heritage 5.Wild  6.Bliss 7.Essence 8. Festive. We are not so much interested in Scenic,Anuradhapur,Wild,Bliss,Essence and Festive group of itineraries. We will be more interested in Heritage, a bit of Pristine. Venita ,of course, is more interested in shopping. Children want their mother and grandmother to shop as much as she can. She buys mostly for them and little for herself.They are the main beneficiaries. Cheers to you children iii.

Completed morning program. Spent the day reading newspapers and doing misc.work.
Pilku is 46 today. He was born on 20.12.1968. According to the Indian calender, he came to this world at  about 05.58 hrs of Thursday, Shuklapaksh, Pratipada of Paush, Samvat 2025. Venita did Puja in the temple early morning and distributed prasad and 'khir' to all. We talked to him in London. I told him that he had seen me how i faced ups and downs in life coolly. He should take a lesson from it. Things settle down sooner or later. Whatever happens in our life is for our good. He will see truth of it soon.

Shillong visit

Completed morning program. Venita arrived at about noon by Virgin Atlantic. Worked from home. Left Shillong at about 8.30 am. Had a cup of tea at Barapani IB. Very refreshing.You do not get lake view from IB now. Big trees block it. Shillong has become more congested. Guwahati is developed a lot. New malls. Cannot locate old Guwahati. It is all new. Quite a few fly-overs. International brands can be seen all over.
Visited Shankar Barua's place. His wife lives mostly in Delhi with her son. His mother was there. She wept a bit. She said CBI seized most of family jewellery and other property papers in search in connection with Sarada chit fund case. She was left with two steel rings in fingers.
Met with Mrs Chakravorty. Her husband died about a year back. Her eyes were moist when i left. I gave Rs 500 to her grandson whom i saw for the first time. After lunch at Assam guest house,left by Air India at about 4.30 pm. Reached Delhi after a flight of 2 hours 20 minutes.

At dinner in Peter'house i had Chinese food. Sweet dish, chocolate cream cake by Peter's wife, Nandita, was superb. My room in the Meghalya Police guest house, Shillong was full of sunshine during the day. It was quite pleasing. Photon plus did not work in Shillong as well as Guwahati. Meeting with the Commission continued upto 3 pm. Although there were invitations for dinner and drinks, but i did not feel like going out. Had quiet dinner in the room. 
Very cold day Talked to Mrs Bezbaruah over phone. Bezbaruah had gone to Pune. She inquired about Pilku, Silku and Babloo. When Pilku and Silku stayed in the hostel of Edmond's school, Bezbaruahs were their local guardian at Shillong. As Babloo too had to join Edmond's and we could not afford his stay in the hostel,we hired annexe of a house where all three of them stayed with Venita for their school education. Pilku had come down to Guwahati later to join Central School for his 10+2 which he completed at Delhi after all of us moved there on my deputation to the Central Bureau of Investigation in 1985.
Wlll leave for Guwahati tomorrow.

I almost missed the flight to Guwahati as i delayed in reporting due to traffic jams on the way. Duty officer of Air India at the airport helped. The porter whom i engaged took me to the aircraft through shortcut to the gate on an electric car. I rewarded them. Meghalaya police had sent transport with escort to take me to Shillong. Due to agitating women i was held up for about half-an-hour at Khanapara on way. Had a cup of tea at Burnihat. Assam skyline has changed a lot with highrise-multi-storeyed buildings, hotels. Total impression is of prosperity. There are no more ramshackled houses,
On way to Shillong took rest at Nongpow forest IB. But i could not get that memorable cup of tea which i used to when i was DGP Meghalaya. The Chaukidar did not have gas to prepare it. Even tea at Burnihat was no good.
I am visiting Meghalaya after about 10 years. Last time i came for Commission of Inquiry in 2002-4. Road is four lane and still being done up in patches. Due to pilot, there is continuity and safety in road journey. I missed helicopter as it leaves Guwahati at about 9 am. Left Nongpow early.The coal trucks would start moving now. In fact major chunk of traffic coming from Shillong side consisted of them. Reached Shillong at about 6.45 pm. Went to Peter's house for dinner at about 8.30 pm.. Peter had invited a couple of retired IAS officers and a former DGP Meghalaya with their families. Returned guest house at about midnight after dinner. The Governor here is well known to me We worked together in Civil defence when he was IGP Arunachal Pradesh. I am sure he  would have permitted me to stay in Raj Bhavan on request. But  I stayed in the Meghalaya Police Guest house where i felt more comfortable

A friend has forwarded me an article on 'Steps to Avoid a fall and an Accident' By KATIE HAFNE , published in the New York Times, NOV. 3, 2014 ,with his comments "It is a useful article for those over 75 years or less depending on the state of your fitness. It is  a staggering statistics that one third of Americans over 65 yrs fall every year. Recoveries can be slow or incomplete for the rest of person's life. Among the recommendations regular exercise is the most obvious. And one need not be in the vulnerable age or fitness level for it. It can be an excellent preventive medicine for life long. Particularly balance exercises like standing on one foot." 
It is interesting to know these facts.

Completed morning program. Visited CGHS. Called on the office of the DG Civil defence.Fire services and Home guards and NDRF.to hand over a memento which i had received as the then DG Civil defence etc. in 1997. I thought that its proper place to keep would be the office of the DG Civil defence.

PM Modi addressed 2 rallies in Jammu and Kashmir. He invoked people to vote for BJP. Departing from their earlier stand, there is no mention in the Party's vision document{instead of manifesto} for abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution,which gives special status to the State.
The DSPE Act is amended enabling selection of  the Director CBI by a panel consisting of the PM,the CJI or his representative and the Leader of the single largest party in Lok Sabha in absence of the Leader of opposition. The amendment was necessitated as no party qualified to be named as Opposition party. None won 10 percent of seats of the total strength of Lok Sabha.The Congress party was ten short of 10 percent.

The 18th SAARC summit at Kathmandu did not achieve much except coming together of heads of the SAARC countries which itself is significant. They open up at informal level and know where they stand against each other on bilateral  issues.  Energy cooperation pact was the only achievement of the Summit. Road and Rail are to follow.

Completed morning program. Researches have established that drinking of too much of milk can be detrimental to health. It is better to take it in moderation.
The reason for delineation of only German as third language in KVS curricula by the UPA govt is not clear. It is not one of the languages, listed in the 8th Schedule of the  the Indian Constitution. It could be pursued only as an optional subject. But the mistake could be corrected from the next academic year to avoid inconvenience to students this year.

A number of burglaries have taken place around Silku's house at Gurgaon. He apprehended that next target of burglars could be his house. Spoke to the local Deputy Commissioner of police. She said that she would take preventive steps. Police find difficult to detect burglaries all over the world. These are intelligently organized crimes. Not more than 5 to 6 percent of them are detected. One has to take steps himself to prevent the burglaries. Burglar alarms are to be installed. Stronger locks have to be used. Some kind of private watch and ward should be arranged. Resort to insurance of expensive items is also suggested.
 On the contrary, detection of theft cases by police is much better

Attended a contributory get-together of Allahabad university alumni at 6,Raisina road residence of Shri Murli Manohar Joshi, Member of Parliament. There were speeches, songs, poems apart from interactions with the alumni at the time of dinner. It was nice to share food and talk to Chaturvedi, former Union home secretary & Member of Parliament., Kashyap, former Secretary General Rajya Sabha and the current president of Allahabad University Association and some others.

Completed morning program. Visited the 7th Central Pay Commission. The Commission is visiting Himanchal Pradesh and  likely to return in the evening. Interacted with the staff. They could not trace out the Memorandum of the Association of Senior Retired IPS officers. They will let me know after finding it out so that a date can be fixed for interaction of the Association with the Commission.They inquired whether we would like to make a presentation or just interaction. I informed that i would let them know shortly. Due to the engagement with  the Commission during the day, had to miss visit to the Supreme court.
Neha directed a show at Shri Ram school at Gurgaon in the evening where Akshat is studying.

Completed morning program. Visited Safdarjung hospital. In the Supreme court from about 1 to 2.30 pm. In the Computer room of the Supreme court one can do work on his laptop or the desktop provided therein.
1.Due to drizzle, Venita could not go out for walk in the morning. She could go at noon to Wimbledon central court market.
2.Yesterday minimum temperature at Delhi went down to 11 degree Celsius.
3.'The narrative on Lord Jagannath' at Puri was given to Venita's friend at Vikaspuri after collecting it from Shri Swain as desired by her. He had taken it from her before going to Puri a couple of months back. Her friend is going to Puri shortly.
4.BJP government won trust vote in Maharashtra assembly. Poll surveys predict BJP victory in Jharkhand and good number of MsLA in Jammu and Kashmir too, though not a majority. PDP is predicted to be the number one party but may not have enough MsLA to form the government on its own. It would need support of some more MsLA. Both the states are going to polls this month.

Visited CGHS and SBI. Shri Tulsi is allotted a bunglow on Motilal Nehru Marg consequent upon his nomination to Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament, as a member by the then UPA Government. He has shifted his residence and chambers to the new accommodation. It does not have enough place for all the advocates to sit and work.I have decided to move to another place. There are three options. I will decide within a day or two to which place i should move to. At present i am working from the Supreme court.

Completed morning program. Venita left Delhi at noon to be with our son and his family in London . She will stay there upto 7th Dec and return Delhi on 8th. Neha , Mrs Prasad along with me saw her off at the airport. I followed her over phone till she settled in her berth at about 1.30 pm. As i did not get a call after that, i presumed she was airborne at about 1.55 pm, the scheduled time of departure. Local time (GMT) of arrival at Hethrow is 5.55 pm ,that is to say, at about 11.25 pm according to IST. IST is 5.30 hours ahead of GMT. I could not get international roaming in her cell as it was still in the name of Babloo. He gave the cell to her few years back. It is not yet transferred to her  name.  Whenever i would tell him to get it transferred to Venita's name, he would say," Papa,what is the  need for it ?" After the episode i hope he would now come forward and get it transferred to his mother's name. Pilku would give her a local phone in London. She can talk as much as she likes.(She is compulsive talker ). It is inexpensive. I used one such cell during stay with Pilku in 2013.

Completed morning program. Venita's eyes checked at Center for sight by Dr.Talwar. As she is traveling abroad for about a month from 9th Nov to 6th Dec.,we decided to get the check done today. There is no further deterioration in the eyes . She is to be tested for glaucoma on return. She visited the dentist yesterday.

Completed morning program. Due to Mharram, the courts were closed. Visited Soni service center for repair of laptop. It informed that Soni had stopped production of laptops. In fact other companies are following suit. People are buying tablets more than laptops. Service center may continue for another couple of years,

Completed morning program. Munna left New Delhi on a four and a half-an-hour journey by Indigo flight to Coimbatore. In the Supreme court and chamber from about 1 to 4 pm. Devout among Hindus are observing Prabodhini 'Ekaadasi' today. It is widely believed among them that the couple will have a happy married life if they wed today.Three marriages are going on in the Maidan adjacent to the Society complex with great deal of Baja/Gaja. Coincidentally i had visited Tirupati on Prabodhini Ekadasi day in 1991/1992 and had a close view of the deity, Lord Vishnu along with His Hindu and Muslim wives. The Vishnu idol was massive, awe-inspiring , sanctifying and vibrating indescribable peace/satisfaction of unique kind. I keep fast on each Ekadasi.

Completed morning program. The chambers are being shifted to another place. The process may be over within a week. Venita and some other ladies of the society took 'Karhi/bhat' under Gooseberry tree of the park near the Society complex. She does it every year on Navmi, Shuklapaksha of the Kartik month. Gooseberry or Amla reduces acidity. Completed morning program. Carpenter repaired the  doors/windows installed by him 3/4 months back. He says there are many hassles in carpentry and would shift to another business. Which business does not have hassles, i asked ? He did not have an answer. Painting of some furniture was done.
Advocate Anupam Tiwari, Advocate Ajay and Advocate Digvijay Singh came. Krishnanand, a neighbor and old friend, also visited. The DM., posted at Fatehpur these days, is his close relation.

Completed morning program. In the series of Pujas during Deepawali, Chitragupt is worshiped today. He is the record keeper of our deeds. The children of Kayastha community worship their pen,book,computer and pray to Him to give knowledge and strength to do good deeds. As desired by Venita, I worshiped my computer,pen and one magazine as i did not have a book at hand. It is all e-knowledge these days and computer epitomizes that. There are 6 main days of celebration during Deepawali,namely,Dhanterus,Chhoti Diwali,Badi Diwali, Govardhan,Chitragupta and Bhayya Dwij Pujas.  After Chitragupta Puja by me, Venita did Bhayya Dwij Puja praying for the well being of her brothers. She went to Allahabad to meet her youngest brother and his family for Bhaiya Dvij  and to spend a couple of days with them. In the Bhayya Dwij ceremony she did Tilak of her brother wishing him long life.

Completed morning program. Deepawali celebrated today. All over the locality,rows of twinkling colourful lights were seen. In our house too there were lights all over. A number of of crackers burst. Ajay,Shivji,his brothers,their families and late Naresh Bhaisaheb's family came. We had a lavish Lakshmi puja.
