News of the day :On the eve of 64th Republic Day of India, the President addressed the nation. A report on the same is given below :
Triggering a fresh debate in the context of the brutal gangrape in Delhi and youth protests that followed, President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday raised a question whether the country’s legislature reflects emerging India or does it need radical reforms.
Asking whether corruption has overtaken morality in life, he said elected representatives must win back people’s confidence and the anxiety and the restlessness of the youth has to be channelised towards change with speed, dignity and order.
In his first address to the nation on the eve of the 64th Republic Day, Mr. Mukherjee referred to the “grave tragedy” of the brutal rape and murder of a woman in the capital that has shattered complacency.
“The brutal rape and murder of a young woman, a woman who was symbol of all that new India strives to be, has left our hearts empty and our minds in turmoil. We lost more than a valuable life; we lost a dream. If today young Indians feel outraged, can we blame our youth?” he asked.
The President said there is a law of the land but there is also a higher law. The sanctity of a woman is a directive principle of that larger edifice called Indian civilisation. “When we brutalise a woman, we wound the soul of our nation.”
“It is time for the nation to reset its moral compass. Nothing should be allowed to spur cynicism, as cynicism is blind to morality. We must look deep into our conscience and find out where we have faltered.
“The solutions to problems have to be found through discussion and conciliation of views. People must believe that governance is an instrument for good and for that, we must ensure good governance,” he said." The Hindu, dt. 25.01.2013 on line.

News of the day : Gang rape case still continues to be a live issue in the press. In fact, similar incidents get reported in the front page. Still there are people who light candles at Jantar Mantar in memory of the gang rape victim of 16th December 2012. To prevent occurrence of rapes we have to take into account the vagaries of human nature which are basically animalistic. Alcohol and drugs make a man lose self control and indulge in aggressive behavior. Loneliness too occasions indulgence in sex. We have to provide for an environment of social behavior where opposite sexes can interact in groups. Enforcement of existing provisions of law will go a long way in creating fear in the mind of  the individuals against aggressive behaviour  resulting in rapes. Time bound trials have to take place so that the culprits are sentenced and punishment given to them. We have to take a comprehensive view of the situation wherein social, ethical and group behavior are redefined. The rapes among known individuals/relations could also be prevented if action is taken along above lines.
Intermittent firing between the forces of Pakistan and India along the Line of Control resulting in killing of soldiers on both sides has soured mutual relations. The head of the Indian soldier should be  found out and given by Pakistan to India to ease tension.
The next cricket match between England and India is to take place at Ranchi on 19th January, 2013. If India can repeat Kochi performance,  we may win the third ODI.  Hockey IPL has invoked lot of interest in the country.
Fluctuation in the value of Indian rupee visa-a-dollar is resulting in increase in the cost of POL. Even the CNG and Indane Gas are  becoming costlier. The value of the rupee can be stabilized if we can enhance the exports and reduce deficit in the balance of payments. Foreign investments can also help in stabilizing the value of rupee. Although inflation is reported to be a little over 7% but the cost of living is increasing and affecting the quality of life of the middle class.

News of the day :" Genes link Australia with India: Indians broke Australian isolation, study says"
"SYDNEY: People from the Indian sub-continent migrated to Australia and mixed with Aborigines 4,000 years ago, bringing the dingo dog with them, according to a study published on Tuesday.

The continent was thought to have been isolated from other populations until Europeans landed at the end of the 1700s.

But researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, reported "evidence of substantial gene flow between Indian populations and Australia about 4,000 years ago".

They analysed genetic variation from across the genome from Australian Aborigines, New Guineans, Southeast Asians, and Indians.

"Long before Europeans settled in Australia humans had migrated from the Indian subcontinent to Australia and mixed with Australian Aborigines," the study said.

It found "substantial gene flow from India to Australia 4,230 years ago ie... well before European contact," it said.Times of India Science, dt., 16.01.2013 on line

News of the day :"This day symbolizes father-son ties"
"BANGALORE: The Sun is the source of all life on Earth. Whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. So Sun is considered as the God of light. He is the closest image to mankind and has a divinity. People worship the Sun God on this day.

Sankranti (Sankramana) means movement. This festival is considered to be Festival of Movement of the Sun, even though the Sun enters 12 zodiac signs in each month and that's called Masa Sankranti. But in this 12 Masa Sankranti, two of them are considered as auspicious days.

The Puranas say that on this day, the Sun visits the house of his son Shani, who is the swamy of Makara Rashi. The father and son do not get along well, but in spite of these differences, they meet on this day. The father, in fact, comes to his son's house himself for a month. This day symbolizes the importance of a special relationship between the father and son.

This day represents the movement of the Sun to two different ayanas that is Uttarayana and Dakshinayana. The Sun's movement from Karkataka to Dhanu is called Dakshinayana & Makara to Mithuna is known as Uttarayana. The entry of Sun to these zodiac signs is considered as auspicious and brings good results.
Makara Sankranti is one of the most auspicious day for Hindus and is celebrated in almost all parts of the country in myraid cultural forms, with great devotion, fervour & gaiety. News of the day : "Vivekananda a turning point in modern history of India and world?"
"Was Swami Vivekananda a turning point in the modern history of India and the world, and did he trigger a new spiritual wave? This is the point of reflection of a commemorative volume that studies how 30 years after his birth in 1893, the monk had taken the Western world by storm with his ground-breaking ideas on religion and philosophy.

The tome, prepared to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, says that the nationwide celebration of the iconic figure’s birth anniversary this year should become a second turning point, expediting the process of change that he initiated over a century ago.

Several sections of the book, which deals with the monk’s teachings and sayings, show how prescient he was. An article on him and the ideal woman of the future refers to the portion where an observation made by Vivekananda over 100 years ago is to the fore again now. “In India there are two great evils — trampling on women and grinding of the poor... There is no hope for the rise of that family or nation where there is no estimation of women or where they live in sadness,” he wrote.
While the book is divided into five sections, the ones on his personality and his teachings may just as well turn out to be the most avidly read. The book published by the Advaita Ashrama will be available from all outlets of the Ramakrishna Mission at a discount." The Hindu, dt., 7th Jan. on line.

News of the day :"World's largest solar telescope planned at Ladakh"

"The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), has zeroed in on Ladakh as the probable destination for the world’s largest solar telescope. Work is likely to begin by the end of this year.
"The 2-metre class state-of-the-art National Large Solar Telescope built by IIA at an expected cost of Rs 150 crore is planned for completion in 2017.
According to SS Hasan, former director, IIA, the organisation had initially zeroed-in on three sites – Hanle and Merak near Ladakh’s Pangong Lake or Devasthal near Nainital in Uttarakhand.
The proposed telescope, which will be used to observe the Sun during the day needs long hours of sunshine and clear visibility conditions.
“It took us over four years to finalise the site. We hope to complete the project by 2017,” Hasan told reporters on the sidelines of the plenary session of the 100th Indian Science Congress.
The device will help Indian scientists carry out “cutting edge research” aimed at studying the Sun’s atmosphere.
Hasan said further, the back-end instrument will be constructed in India while night-time instruments will come from Germany. Apart from the IIA, which is the nodal agency, the other institutes involved in the project include Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and Inter-University Centre.
Currently, the world’s largest solar telescope is the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope having a diameter of 1.6 metres. It is located in Kitt Peak National Observatory at Arizona in the US.

3rd Jan

Completed morning program, but could not go for walk. In chamber from 1.15 to 4 pm.
It was a chilly day with mercury going down to a minimum level of about 2' C. We are having the coldest January in last 44 years. The tempo of agitation on the gang rape issue has come down. Delhi police filed charge-sheet in Saket court today . The front pages of newspapers have  reports of rape cases in different parts of the country. The majority of them involve the victims and people known/related to them, unlike the beastly gang rape case which shook the conscience of Delhi and other parts of the country. I hope something positive will come out of the current tempo against molestation of women and people behave well with the women.

News of the Day: "The reason we blink? Most of the time it's so our brains can switch off
  • When we blink, our brains goes into idle mode where thoughts wander freely, say Japanese researchers
  • These mental breaks can last anywhere from a split second to a few seconds before attention is fully restored
  • Most of us take between 15 and 20 such moments of downtime per MINUTE
  • We spend around 10 per cent of our waking hours with our eyes shut.
And while it's commonly thought that we blink to keep our eyes lubricated, it seems a lot of the time it's because our brains need a little nap.
New research suggests that the human brain uses that tiny moment of shut-eye to power down.
Researchers from Japan's Osaka University found that the mental break can last anywhere from a split second to a few seconds before attention is fully restored.
Scans that track the ebb and flow of blood within the brain revealed that regions associated with paying close attention momentarily go offline.
The brain then goes into a 'default mode network', or idle setting.
The same setting is engaged when our attention is not required by a cognitive task such as reading or speaking and our thoughts wander freel
During this mode we tend to contemplate our feelings; we wonder what a friend meant by a recent comment; we consider something we did last week, or imagine what we'll do tomorrow.
While listening to another person or reading, that usually comes at the end of a sentence and while watching a film, we're most likely to blink when an actor leaves the scene or when the camera shifts.
Most of us take between 15 and 20 such moments of downtime per minute.
The new research, published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, studied 20 healthy young subjects in a brain scanner as they watched snippets from the British comedy Mr. Bean.
When subjects blinked, the researchers detected a momentary stand-down within the brain's visual cortex and somatosensory cortex -- both involved with processing visual stimuli - and in areas that govern attention.

"Earth to be closest to Sun on Wednesday"
News of the day :"New Delhi: Stargazers will get a celestial treat on New Year with the sun coming nearest to the earth on Wednesday.
The earth will be at its nearest point from the sun at 10.10am on Wednesday at a distance of 147 million km, Planetary Society of India general secretary N. Sri Raghunandan Kumar said on Wednesday.
Every January, the earth is at perihelion, the closest from the sun for the year, and in July it is at aphelion, the farthest to the sun for the year, he said. This year the earth will be at aphelion on 5 July. The word perihelion comes from the Greek words “peri” (meaning “near”) and “helios” (meaning “sun”). All planets, comets and asteroids in our solar system have elliptical orbits. Thus, they all have a closest and a farthest point from the sun—a perihelion and an aphelion, he said.
Explaining the reason why the temperature does not rise on “perihelion day” even when the sunlight is more, Kumar said, “There are many reasons for it. Blame it on the tilt of the earth’s axis. Actually, our seasons are determined by the tilt of the earth and not by how close the earth is to the sun." Live Mint and the Wall Street Journal, dt.2nd Jan.2012.

1st Jan. 2013

Due to biting cold, could not undertake morning program. Venita left for an old Sangmeshwar Shiva temple in Krukshetra at about 6.30 am, even before sunrise. She was accompanied by 2 other ladies of the Society. She also visited Vishnu and Goddess Mahakali temples, besides some other temples. She rested a while in Haryana Govt guest house at Pipli on way to the temple and at a Dhaba on way back to Delhi. A number of persons from the family circuit rang up to wish for the New year. Some other than the family also rang up. Venita returned at about 8 pm.

                                   Five New Year Resolutions
"Be active:
In this era of technology and science, we are continuously becoming slaves to machines and gadgets speckled round us. We become so increasingly dependent on them that lethargy takes over. Shun this habit right away and make your body work. Try to inject each day with some physical activity. Instead of using the lift everytime, take stairs. Instead of pulling over that car for going to a nearby shop, just walk till there. Devote some time everyday in brisk walking or jogging.

Quit smoking and excessive drinking:
Okay, you must have heard this a zillion times through a plethora of messages, advertisements, advices, suggestions all pleading you to get rid of these deadly habits. But you just won’t listen thinking that nothing can happen to you. But the next victim could be you. So, take charge of your life and recognize the dangers swarming ahead of you in the form of these two lethal habits. Quitting smoking might be the most challenging resolution, but challenge yourself this time and face up to your limitations.
Limit your intake of sugar and salt:
Sugar increases triglycerides, cholesterol, and insulin can harm the immune system .This applies for everyone and not just the diabetics. Always check food labels before buying products and look for hidden sugar such as corn syrup, sucrose, glucose, and lactose. In the same manner excessive intake of salt is very bad for the body, as it causes water retention and makes you look bloated and also increases blood pressure. Have both these items in moderation and keep a check on what you eat.
Sleep well:
People across the world are committing less time for sleep and fill in other activities instead of it. Almost 70 different sleep disorders have been identified and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems .This lack of sleep has been shown to impact motivation, concentration, energy, and weight gain/loss and can affect memory and your moods. So, always put sleep first before all other important activities. Making a commitment to get the proper quantity and quality of sleep can help you get focused, feel motivated, and have energy to achieve your goals including these resolutions as well .So, don’t wait and just get started!
Stress less:
In this hectic life, we all are prone to stress and tension, no denying that. Stress is an inevitable part of life and short bouts of stress give us an energy boost .But the moment it magnifies, it can take the form of a chronic one escalating into insomnia, depression and other mental disorders. So, you have to figure out how to deal with stressful situations and not let them get inside your nerves. For this , meditate everyday and build up a support system for yourself. Don’t isolate yourself from others and keep your friends and family at near proximity. Spend time with them and share your life with them Z News, Health,dt.01.01 2013 on line"
