8th July

Completed morning program.
"Justice Iyer of the Supreme Court made a distinction between the 'rule of law' and the 'rule of life' in a judgement in 1975. The judge articulated the ever present tension between a universal 'rule of law' and an insular 'rule of life'at the heart of India's democracy. The human DNA is imprinted with a natural propensity to favour family, friends and community. These loyalties invite corruption and nepotism in the absence of strong incentives in favour of impartiality. The social anthropologist, Earnest Gellner, labelled it 'tyranny of cousins'. The historian David Gilmartin equates the 'rule of li.fe' to sva-dharma, duties to one's family, cast and community. In contrast, the rule of law is akin to sadharana dharma, duties which reflect the higher universal ideals of the Constitution." Gurcharan Das in TOI at p.,10,dt.08.o7.12 A brilliant analysis of the state of affairs in the society by Shri Das.
Pilku has suggested not to sell Fatehpur house until Abhishree and Amolikaa have seen it, its photographs are taken with them and we get a suitable villa type house to shift to in South Delhi or Gurgaon or Noida. Born and living in England ,they, like any British citizen, have an unique sense of history and a psyche to know their roots. We will not sell unless they have visited it.
I sent a mail to the Director, National Police Academy (NPA), Hyderabad offering to give my riding boots free to anyone  in the Academy  who needed. These were bought by me in 1964 (now 48 year old) at the Central Police Training College (CPTC), Mount Abu.  The CPTC is now known as NPA. IPS officers are trained here. These are absolutely in good condition and packed with wooden pieces inside to prevent deflation. He is collecting them tomorrow.
Retired to sleep at 10.30pm.
